News and Information
Book Orders- Due by Midnight tonight!
Grandparent's Day Is Coming!!!
Grandparent's Day Interview Booklets are due no later than Friday, September 22nd.
My class will have grandparent's day on Wednesday, November 8 from 8:30-9:30. More information and invitations will be sent home at a later date, but wanted to let you know for planning purposes!
WOW! As I was reading back through this newsletter I can see now why all of us are exhausted by the end of each day! We are truly doing 2nd grade work now and it can be difficult for the students as we guide (or sometimes push!) them through new and difficult material. Thank you for helping your child get to bed at a decent hour as many nights as possible and for helping them stay healthy with good meals!
Jackets Needed! First recess at 10:30 has been COLD!
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:47 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
I'm sending home a couple of activities at your child's reading level each Monday. These are activities are things that you can keep at home - no need to return them. They are just to help you out if you are wondering what a certain reading level "looks" like and give you on level texts to help them practice fluency and comprehension skills.
Growth Mindset-- What is it??
Reading
This week we are working on finding the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction reading passages. We are learning that good readers ask themselves questions before, during and after they read.
Charlie's Reading Challenge!
We are participating in Charlie's Reading Challenge sponsored by Ball State University. Each student who reads 4 books at their level during the month of September will earn 2 free tickets to the home Ball State Football Game on October 21st. We have been working this week here at school, but if your child read some at home let me know how many books and I will move their football on the chart accordingly!
Math Skills For This Week
Addition fact strategies:
- doubles (2+2, 3+3, etc.)
- doubles plus one (3+4, 5+6, 6+7, etc.) Double the smaller number and add 1
- counting on when adding 1,2 or 3- start with the larger number and jump up 1,2 or 3
- ten's partners - Show 8+ 7 on 2 different 10 frames. Move 2 from the 7 frame up to the 8 frame. Now the equation becomes 10+5.
- adding 0 and adding 9- 9+6 -- think of it as 10 +5
- commutative property of addition - it doesn't matter the order of the addends, you will still get the same sum
I've sent home flash cards each night this week that correspond with the types of facts described above. Please feel free to use those to practice facts a few minutes each night. The faster they are in knowing their facts, the easier it will be when we get to adding and subtracting double digit numbers!
English and Writing
Writing-
- SHOWING NOT TELLING when you write. Instead of saying "I felt sick." You could say, " I clenched my stomach and bent forward right before I lost my lunch." This helps the reader make a better picture in their mind while reading your piece.
- Using transition words to keep our story in sequence: first, next, then, last, etc.
- writing a rough draft
- adding facts and details
- editing and revising
- using a rubric to make our writing the best it can be
- publishing our work
English skills: imperative and exclamatory sentences

Homework Help and Hints!
Sequencing the events is a story is a difficult concept for many children. When you read a book aloud to your child or when they read one to you, try having them make a bulleted list of the events in the order they happened. You can even color code the events to show beginning, middle and end. Here is an example from Imogene’s Antlers, by David Small, a book we read earlier this year. By the way, using phrases for this activity instead of complete sentences takes some of the frustration away because they don’t have to focus on a capital, end mark and subject/ verb agreement. Also, they could verbally retell you the story and you could write it down for them.
- Thursday Imogene work up with antlers
- Trouble getting dressed and going downstairs
- Mother fainted
- No help from doctor and principal
- Brother Norman looked in encyclopedia- rare form of miniature elk
- Mother fainted
- Family called milliner
- Milliner made a huge hat
- Mother fainted
- Practiced piano and went to bed
- Woke up without antlers
- Grew peacock feathers
