We Studied:

In language arts we continued with the Treasures theme on "Making a Difference." Students read "Wild Horses," a narrative nonfiction piece about how Dayton Hyde helped make a sanctuary to save wild horses. While reading, we focused on the reading comprehension skill of "cause and effect." We analyzed important events in the story and discussed the results of these events.

In addition, we continued to read Because of Winn Dixie, a realistic-fiction novel by Kate DiCamillo. Some reading groups continued with literature circle jobs with the novel, while other reading groups continued to practice the skill of sequencing events to help them summarize the main details in each chapter.

During math we studied chapter 6 on algebra with multiplication and division facts. Students need to be able to know their facts through twelve. Any extra practice through games, flashcards, websites, apps, etc, will really help them with this. If you have an ipad at home, Sushi Monster is an app. that we have been using in class to practice their facts that students really like. Also consider using a deck of cards to play the game of "War' with students (ask them to teach you this). A website students can go to practice their math facts is: http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/mathmagician/maths1.htm

Also, using the Dreambox app. at home would also be very helpful for students (see the updates above for more information on how to access that).l

Throughout writing students continued their imaginative "spooky tale" story. Please remember that students may need to go on Google Drive at home to finish their work. They can download the Google Drive app on their ipads at home (if they have one) or go to "drive.google.com" on any computer. Then they'll need to type in their username and password (on their password paper) but should be:

Username: firstnamelastname@sbsd.k12.ca.us

Password: fourdigitssolana

Students started to research their Early Californian tribe and I started to show them how to weave baskets in social studies. They will continue to research their tribe and present their findings in an imovie presentation for their performance assessment.

Have a Great Weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Gill
