JCPS On-going Running Records for K-5
All students in grades K-1 should have at least 4 running records per quarter.
All students in grades 2-5 should have at least 3 running records per quarter.
If a student is reading below grade level in grades 2-5, he/she should have at least 4 running records per quarter.
All K-5 students should have observation/anecdotal notes.
Running records provide some extremely useful data that can both document change and direct instruction. They provide evidence of how students are going about understanding what they are reading. Don’t forget to take advantage of those “teachable moments”! After the running record, go back and praise the student for a strategy that worked for him/her by verbalizing the attempts that student made. By doing this, you are catching what the student did right and bringing it to a conscious level. You could also teach from a strategy that didn’t work. For example, “I noticed at this tricky part, you tried….. What’s another strategy that you could use to help yourself work out that word?”. Possible times that you could get a quick DRA or running record done… Before school while students are unpacking their backpack Teachers in the past have found “Independent Reading” at the beginning of their day to be calming and sets the tone for the rest of the day. You can fit in a DRA or a running record at this time. During your small Guided Reading groups Before starting your lesson, have students sit and read their books from their book basket silently while you are taking a running record/DRA. At the end of the day Some teachers find it helpful to grab a few minutes at the end of the day while the students are independently reading a book to give a running record/DRA. Some teachers divide their 30 minutes of “Independent Reading” into two 15 minute sessions...beginning of the day/end of the day. Set your goal to get a Running Record on each student every two weeks. At the end of each quarter, teachers will be asked to show documentation of completion. Please schedule a time for Terri to come into your room and model what should be done before the reading, during, and most importantly, after the reading. She will walk you through the process of how it is an instructional tool and not just something that needs to be checked off your to-do list.
