Dear GRE Families,
It's hard to believe that Harvest Parties are in the books! Thank you to all of our families who helped make this a very special experience for our students. As I walked around from room to room, students were grinning from ear to ear and enjoying the time spent together. It's so nice to have this time each year together to see a different side of our students and families.
As we look at the week ahead, we will be turning the calendar to November! It's hard to imagine that we are already 50+ days in to the school year. In November we will have our annual Food Drive. Be sure you check backpacks and the PTO Facebook page to stay in the loop. We will also have our Art Day and Veteran's Day celebrations. Not to mention Thanksgiving Break following our first Eagle Ed of the year! Phew-I'm tired just thinking about all the fun coming up this month! Stay tuned!
Here's to a great week!

Important Info
2. Please do not drop your child off in the bus loop! We have buses that arrive at different times and it is not safe to pull up to the bus loop side and let students out. It can also be very frustrating for the parents who have followed the correct procedures and waited in line to safely let their children out in the direct care of a staff member. We appreciate your adherence to this policy. If you have questions, please contact me directly.
3. It's that time of year already! Please check out the resource below provided by our District Nurse, Megan Truax-help us keep our students healthy!
Specials Spotlight: Music with Mrs. Wood
Fall is a great time of year in music! Students get to explore their voices with spooky sounds and animate stories with movement and instruments. Here are a couple of highlights from each grade level.
Kindergarten:
Students are using non-pitched percussion instruments such as the drums, maracas, ratchet,
egg shakers, tambourines, and tone blocks to accompany the story “The Little Old Lady Who
Wasn’t Afraid of Anything”. Each object in the story is represented by a different instrument.
Students are also exploring their voices through a variety of songs and chants.
Music Playlist:
Ask your child to sing or chant: Little Ghosty, I Shut the Door, Button You Must Wonder
1st Grade:
We recently read the story, “Carnival of the Animals,” where students listened to the music of
French composer, Camille Saint-Saens and explored contrasting movements (flow, weight,
space, and time) as they pretended to move like the animals in the story. Students are also
beginning to learn about minor tonality and triple meter through a variety of songs and chants.
Music Playlist:
Ask your child to sing or chant: Little Ghosty, Stirring Our Brew, Pass the Pumpkin
2nd Grade:
Students have been learning a variety of patriotic songs for our Veteran’s Day assembly, which
is Friday, November 8th from 2:30-3:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. We encourage students to wear
red, white, and blue on this special day to honor our veterans. We hope to see you there!
Students are beginning to create their own tonal patterns to the song, “Skin and Bones”.
They’ve also listened and identified musical characteristics in the song “In the Hall of the
Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg. Ask your student how the music changed from the beginning
to the end of the song.
Music Playlist:
Download the song: “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg
3rd Grade:
We just began our recorder unit this week! Students learned how to play three new notes
(BAG) and the song, “Hot Cross Buns”. They are learning how to play with appropriate
technique and use a gentle sound. Ask your student about our recorder ABC’s and see if they
can tell you what each letter means. Please remind your student to bring their recorder and red music folder every time they come to music!
Music Playlist:
Ask your student to sing: Hot Cross Buns, Closet Key, A Ram Sam Sam, Frog in the Meadow.
4th Grade:
Students are learning how to play a variety of two chord and one chord songs on the ukulele.
They also learned how to play a fun Halloween song called “Skin and Bones”, using a new minor chord.
Music Playlist:
Ask your student to sing or chant: Skin and Bones, Best Day of My Life, Yellow Submarine, Wolf, Rain, Rain, Star Light, John the Rabbit
Important Dates:
Our annual Veteran’s assembly will be Friday, November 8 th at 2:30 p.m. Our second grade
students will be leading us in song and welcoming our Veterans to GRE. Veteran’s Day
invitations were sent home last week. Please RSVP to the event by filling out the form on the
bottom of the invitation. Please indicate on the RSVP if your child will be going home with a
parent or veteran after the assembly. All second grade parents who plan on attending should
also turn in an RSVP.
GRE students and teachers would like to honor the veterans in our lives through a wall of
honor. We’d like to encourage all students to fill out a brick if they know a Veteran (alive or
deceased) who has served in the military. The bricks will be used to build a wall of honor to
honor our veterans at our assembly. We encourage you to include a small picture of your
veteran on your brick. Bricks are due by November 1st .
Congrats to our Golden Spatula Winners!
This week we introduced the "Golden Spatula Award" at lunch time. This prize is awarded to one class at each grade level.
