5th Grade Happenings

Camp Carter

We are continuing to take money for Camp Carter. Please turn any money into your child's homeroom teacher.

Valentines

On Friday, February 12th, we will be giving the students some time to exchange Valentines with their homeroom class. If your child decides to bring Valentines, please make sure there are enough for every student in the class. Please do not bring cupcakes. Anything edible must be able to be put in the students' backpacks and taken home to eat.

Math Madness

This week in math we will continue to focus on polygons as well as converting customary and metric units of measure. Students will have a math LBA on Wednesday. Students will have a test over polygons and measurements on Tuesday, February 16th. Students will need to continue to study their vocabulary words from last week.

In the Science Lab

This week in science we will be finishing up our study of fossils and how they are formed.

The Reading Corner

In ELA, students will practice words with prefixes that change their meanings-and they WILL have a test on Friday, the 12th, before the early dismissal! We will continue to use our strategies, applying them to our understanding of cause and effect. A story by Rose Wilder, "The Hundred-Dollar Bill", will provide "food for thought" as we consider how the cause and effect structure contributes to the plot of the story.

Blast from the Past

Last week the students studied the roots of the conflict that led to the Civil War. This week we will begin the Civil War. The students will discover how the presidential election of 1860 was the final push over the edge of discontent for the Southern states. We will also compare and contrast Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee and their leadership in the war.
