Center Middle School
State of the Campus
Cloudy's Thought Cloud ๐ญ
Today is the final day of the 1st Nine Week grading period and there have been a lot of things happening around the CMS campus. First, I'd like to say thank you for allowing our CMS staff to work with your student on a daily basis. We do not take this responsibility lightly and look forward to partnering with you the remainder of the year in providing an environment where students and adults feel they are welcome.
This newsletter will look similar to the one I send out weekly to our staff to recognize, inform, and celebrate all things CMS. I will mention our initiatives, goals, and organizations among other items.
If you have any suggestions, concerns, or questions about anything, feel free to contact me at any time by email or phone.
Blessings,
Marlin
Attendance (Our Campus Goal is 96%)
One of the leading predictors of student achievement is attendance. We've heard the saying, "showing up is half the battle". Our current campus attendance is at 96.2%, which is just above our goal. With weather change season coming up, we ask that you help your student attend school if sickness or appointments are not involved.
R.I.S.E.
Respect, Integrity, Service, and Education (R.I.S.E.) are our CMS core values and what we hope to see throughout our campus on a daily basis. Below are some displays our staff have created to help remind our students of these core values in the halls and classrooms.
๐ก In The Classroom ๐
Mrs. Chachere's classes created books during class that gave insight into their lives and displayed their culture. It was impressive to see their work. ๐๐๐
These pictures are two of our CMS students' interpretations of "Twilight Cactus" by Ines Alvidres. Thank you Coach Lusk for guiding this activity with your art students and sharing this with us.
6th grade science students working together to create a 3D model of the periodic table. They did a great job with this hands-on activity.
Mrs. Morris's class worked on ordering. To see them be respectful and vulnerable as they critiqued each others' work was a beautiful thing to witness. Helping each other empowered the students and learning how to navigate being coached through making mistakes was not just a math lesson, but real-world life lesson as well.
R.I.S.E.ing Roughriders
RISEing Rider Referrals are a way for our staff to recognize students that carry out our core values around the campus. Students show excitement when I read the teacher comments to them. We want to keep an eye out for and reward those doing positive things around CMS. Below is what the referral looks like with some students that have been recognized so far.
Give Me 5 โ
Our academic student growth initiative of Give Me 5 was initiated at CMS in 2017. The goal was to shift the perspective of teaching, learning, and assessment performance from "failing to passing" to "growth for all". All students have an assessment goal score based on their end of the year assessment from last school year and getting five additional questions correct this year. With this focus, we will be looking at all students and not just borderline passing, underachieving, or overachieving students. Bulletin boards are displayed throughout our campus for students to post and be recognized as they meet their "Give Me 5" goal on each assessment.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BEST MIDDLE SCHOOL STAFF IN SHELBY COUNTY ๐
Thank you for your help in voting CMS the BEST Middle School in Shelby County last year. This is an amazing reward and is an example of the work the staff puts in with your students daily. We will keep doing the necessary work for our students and community to try and repeat this accomplishment again this school year.
๐บ Extra Curricular Activities ๐
We are in full swing with different organizations participating at CMS. Cheer, Band, Cross Country, Football, Volleyball, Pep Squad, Yearbook, JCC, Twirlers, and FFA/Ag have been working hard and competing at different events for the past few weeks. Our Yearbook staff does a great job of covering these events when possible. If you have any pictures of any organizations/individuals feel free to share them with me for recognition of these dedicated students. We are proud of how they represent CMS, CISD, and you all.
