Trailside Elementary Update
September 15, 2023
Week in Review
Trailside live announcements have begun! Miss Parker and Mrs. Landroche began recording with fourth graders this week for first broadcast next Monday.
Students were inspired by Kandinsky to create abstract art.
Kindergarteners explored math and science concepts together as they used a light table while manipulating shapes as part of math workplaces.
Dear Trailside Students and Families,
We had a wonderful week here at Trailside. Next week will be a busy one with Constitution Day, Vision Screenings, and Picture Day. Please take a moment to review a few notes about events next week and coming soon:
Vision Screening- On Monday, 9/18/2023 the Lions Club of Zionsville will be coming to perform vision screens for the 1st and 3rd grade. The Indiana Department of Education requires annual vision screening for all first, third, fifth and eighth graders, special education students, newly enrolled students, and previously missed. This screening does not replace a complete eye evaluation given by a physician but is a fair assessment of visual acuity. Please, have your student wear their glasses on Monday!
PTO Meeting- We will hold our PTO meeting on Monday at 9 AM in the cafeteria. Pre-register using this link: https://secure.safevisitorsolutions.com/Safe/Visitor/zionsvilleschools
Strong in Every Way Speaker Series- Join us in the Zionsville Community High School STAR Performing Arts Center on Monday, September 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to learn about the science of reading and how that knowledge impacts students at all age levels and proficiencies. Jamey Peavler, Co-Director, Instructor, and doctoral candidate of the Reading Science Graduate Program at Mount St. Joseph University will present.
Picture Day- Picture day will be on September 20. Use the ordering link to pre-pay for pictures: https://www.cripephoto.com/trailside-order-page. More details are included below.
Jog A Thon- Our Jog A Thon fundraising campaign continues. Please see the details below on how you can contribute and get involved. We are looking forward to this fun way to support our school on September 29!
Lunch guests- We are ready to accept visitors for lunch! You can use our online system to sign up to have lunch with your student in the office conference room. You will need to bring your ID to check in. Please no more than 2 guests per student due to limited space. So that others may have the opportunity, we ask that you not sign up more than 1 time per calendar month. When you sign up, please put your student name and classroom teacher in the notes. Here is the lunch visitor sign up link: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/TrailsideLunchVisitors@zcsk12in.onmicrosoft.com/bookings/
Membership Toolkit- Our online school directory is now available! See the blurb below for details: https://trailsidezionsvillepto.membershiptoolkit.com
Gym Shoes- Please be sure your child wears gym shoes on the day their class has Wellness. Classes will be doing running training with fun activities as they prepare for Jog-a-thon.
Enjoy the weekend,
Mrs. Jen Raycroft and Ms. Deb Pickett

Visitor and Volunteer Procedures

Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check.. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee for the full background check which will expire after 5 years.
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
Health Clinic Reminders
Clinic Procedures
- All medication (prescription and OTC) must be brought in to the clinic (main office) by a parent/guardian. Students are not allowed to have any medication in their backpack, unless authorized in writing by a physician.
- When your child is ill, please call the main office and press 2 to leave a message on the attendance line. As always, we ask that children are fever-free (below 100.4 degrees) for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication prior to returning to school.
- Students will be given a yellow pass with a visit to the health clinic. If you have questions or concerns about the health clinic policies and procedures or your student’s health visits, please contact the clinic.
- If your child needs Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen for grades K-5, it is school policy that the parents will be contacted
- The clinic also stocks an EpiPen and Benadryl for severe allergic reactions.
Returning to school from Illness:
In order to minimize the spread of infection, please do not send your student to school when ill. The following guidelines may help you determine when it is safe to return your child to school:
*Temperature below 100.4 degrees for 24 hours without fever reducing medication.
*No vomiting for 24 hours and able to tolerate a bland diet.
*Diarrhea free for 24 hours
*Lessening of “acute cold symptoms” such as persistent cough or excessive “runny nose”.
*If your child has a chronic medical issue which causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, cough or increased secretions, the student may return to school with proper documentation of the medical issue.

Child Find and Speech/Language Assistance
Child Find
Child Find is the process for locating, identifying, and evaluating individuals with suspected disabilities who may need special education services, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. This is the responsibility of ZCS regardless of whether a parent affirmatively requests an evaluation. ZCS provides a Free Appropriate Public Education to any child who qualifies as having a disability, in accordance with federal and state laws. ZCS is responsible for locating all children ages 3 through 22 years of age with a suspected disability who reside within the boundaries of its district. With early identification and intervention, frustration and academic failure can be prevented, which in turn creates a positive learning experience for students. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), which encompasses academics and/or social and emotional learning, is an essential component of the child find process. Utilizing screening assessments, the ZCS team members identify students in need of intervention, implement action plans, and monitor the response to the targeted interventions. In addition, the evaluation referral procedures in ZCS provide the framework to refer students with suspected disabilities for evaluation.
Speech and Language Assistance Program
The Speech and Language Assistance Program is designed to provide students with speech and language support within the general education setting. Following the MTSS approach, this program allows for early identification and treatment of speech and language delays, so students receive assistance without having to be identified under special education. The Speech and Language Assistance Program is a three-tiered system in which progress is monitored to determine if additional supports are needed to access education. If adequate progress is not demonstrated, a referral for evaluation will be prompted to determine eligibility under special education (see ZCS evaluation procedures).
