Memorial Day
On Memorial Day, let us honor those who gave their lives for our country. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten. I extend my deepest gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice to our fallen heroes.
Boylston Elementary School
Freckle
This summer we are encouraging all students to take a little time to spend on Freckle! They can have fun with the games and keep their brains in shape at the same time! We are sponsoring a summer virtual program from Monday, July 12th through Friday, August 20th (6 weeks). It is designed to be self-paced and geared to support students in practicing English Language Arts and mathematics skills in a fun and engaging way. Just as important, it will serve as a way to prepare our students for our return to school. We will have two coordinators available to support and encourage students and their families, and to celebrate progress with them along the way. If you are interested in having your child(children) participate in our Freckle Summer Fun Program, please complete this quick questionnaire no later than Friday, June 11th. (Please complete one per child who will be participating).
Talent Show
As the year winds down and COVID restrictions lighten up we are working to make the end of the year as fun as possible! The BES PTO is once again hosting a virtual Talent Show. Students are encouraged to film their talent or friends' talents (outdoors) and submit them to athompson@bbrsd.org to be combined into a YouTube video. Last year's video was so much fun to view. I can't wait to see what the kids come up with now that they can be together. Please have submissions no longer than 2 minutes to me by June 4th.
If you'd like to rewatch last year's show or are looking for some inspiration you need to look no further than our YouTube channel.
Amazing Race for Education
This week, we also announced our Amazing Race for Education participation awards! The participation and support of the community for this fundraiser were outstanding and by the last count, the PTO was able to raise over $12,000 and donations keep rolling in. This money goes directly into the school to support our students and staff. Every grade earned an extra recess (scheduled for next week)! On top of this, Mrs. Gaucher's 1st-grade class earned a special science experiment for bringing in 59 donations. I am of course enlisting resident scientist Mr. Andrews. And of course, the top two donation getters from each grade get a picnic lunch from Chefees! Congratulations to:
Kindergarten - Millie and Carter
1st Grade - Liam H and Tess
2nd Grade - Maggie and Ella
3rd Grade - Nick, Logan, and Justin (tie)
4th Grade - Lydia J and Tyler
5th Grade - Marielle, Ben, and Sadie (tie)
Child Care Weather Watch
The weather is definitely getting warmer and we are constantly trying to balance keeping kids inside away from the sun and getting them outside with room to move and maskless air to breathe. And truthfully, it is often cooler outside especially if a shady spot can be found. Please, plan for the weather when you send your children in. Layers are a great way to account for cool mornings followed by intensely hot afternoons. Sunscreen is also a good idea to apply before they get to school (we are not allowed to apply it for them here). Each morning, much like in the dead of winter, we go to weather.com to look at conditions and decide if we will be eating and recessing (apparently that is a word) outside. We use the same source although the lower portion of the chart to decide if it is safe for children. A combination of temperature and humidity level guides the decision and we do encourage students to use all the shade on the playground.
Kindergarten Orientation
We held our virtual Kindergarten Orientation this week. In case you missed it, the recording can be found on our website here under Announcements. One question that I promised to get back to was the first day of school next year. All students are scheduled to start on August 30. This is typically a "soft" opening for kindergarten with their first full day being the following one (August 31st). For folks looking for the school calendar next year, it can be found here.

Berlin Memorial School
Greetings, all…
Memorial Day weekend is usually a busy time here. Our school is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of the men and women who have served our country. Our Memorial Day program is the stuff of legend. Hopefully, this is the last time that we will be unable to hold a public event to live up to our Berlin Memorial school name.
Fun Run, 2021!
What an amazing event. We had a beautiful day (although a bit hot) to run, and the kids all had a great time. Laura Williamson did an amazing job organizing this, with a great deal of help from Sandra Eckelman! Others who helped included Julie Lee, Shelley Sartini, Jess Rosadini, and Amy Laliberte. Day of the fun run helpers were Mary Kate Flinkfelt, Stephanie Cummings, Lyz Ford, Laurence Holyoak, Ryan Buff, Lindsey Tatanell, Chad Laliberte, Amy Allen, and Sarah Murphy.
Mrs. Murphy also took time to capture the event in pictures which she has shared in a private folder. You can find those amazing pictures here.
Field Day, 2021
Ms. Draper has planned out our Field Day events for this year. We will hold Field Day next Wednesday, June 2. The good news is that because the event is outdoors, kids won’t need masks (although adults do). The bad news is that, because we need to restrict the number of people volunteering, the event will only be a half-day long. You can find details about the day, including what your child will need, by reading here.
MCAS Testing Update
Almost over.
We have a few students left who need to complete make-up tests (which is much more challenging when the internet is only working sporadically) and then we are done for the year. As I mentioned last week, we are grateful for your support at home as we do this work.
Notes from Nurse Ana
Nurse Ana asked me to share information about an upcoming COVID vaccine clinic sponsored by the Nashoba Valley Regional Collective for anyone in need ages 12 and older. You can find the flyer for that here.

Important Clarification for Attendance
Beginning April 12th students who have chosen to learn in person are expected to attend school 5 days per week. In-person learners will not have access to live streaming if they are absent from school (unless COVID-related). Students who are live-streaming must follow the schedule and attend the entire class with their cameras on.
If a student stays home due to not feeling well, a parent may write a parental excusal which should be brought into the Main Office upon the student's return to school. If a live streaming student misses a class due to illness a parent must email an excusal note to Mrs. Boudreau at sboudreau@bbrsd.org.
School districts must take attendance for every student, every period regardless of the mode of learning. If your child is absent from school whether your child is remote or in person, please follow the same procedures:
Call (508)869-2333 x 2303 to report your child absent. If your child is absent due to a medical appt. (doctor or dentist) please bring a note to the main office from the doctor’s office the next day your child is at Tahanto.
If your child is going to be late to school for either remote learning or in-person please still call the above number and make us aware of this. Remote attendance will be taken within the first 10 minutes of class.
Each student has 3 parental excusals that can be used during each semester for absences that are not subject to a doctor’s visit. To use parental excusal please write a note and have your child bring the note to the main office on the next day your child is in person at Tahanto.
If we do not receive a call notifying us of the absence, the secretaries in the main office will be contacting parents/guardians.
If you need further clarification or need to ask a question specific to your child’s attendance, please do not hesitate to contact Sue Boudreau at (508)869-2333 or send an email to sboudreau@bbrsd.org.
