Big Idea
This strategy provides students with an opportunity to use critical thinking to understand the essential attributes of a concept. This strategy is most successful in introducing concepts with clear critical characteristics, words and phrases that align with a concept and keywords and phrases that donate "yes" and "no" categories.
Directions
1. Have students make a chart with 3 columns. Label them 'Examples (Yes)', 'Examples (N0)', & 'My thinking'.
2. Write "yes" and "no" examples in the columns. Then write your ideas about what you think the concept might be under 'My thinking'.
3. This can be done independently or collaboratively.
