Weddington Middle School Newsletter
October 14, 2022

A message from the Principal:
We are ecstatic about stepping into spooky season! Pictures went well today, and we had a bunch of smiling faces. Thanks to our PTSO volunteers for being a part of that operation, and parents should look out for emails from Tumbleston Photography with your proofs and more information on purchasing.
Seventh and eighth grade parents, mark your calendars for Monday, November 7 to come back to school! We had a drop-in experience in August, but are opening the doors again for you to sequence through your classes. With two grade levels represented on campus at the same time, we suggest one parent per student so there is a seat in the classroom for you! We start at 6pm and will spend approximately 10min in each of your child’s five classes. Get ready to come back to school!
Students, we have a couple special events headed your way this week, as Unity Day occurs on Wednesday. This day serves as a symbolic day to unite against bullying and join each other to endorse kindness and acceptance of each other’s differences. As we have in previous years, students may join us in wearing school-appropriate orange tops on Wednesday (uniform bottoms).
We will conclude the week with “Goblin Games” on Friday during Related Arts classes. With a single dollar donation to the North Carolina Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (https://afsp.org/chapter/north-carolina), students will receive a unique WMS/UCPS wristband and access the games.
Happy Friday, and enjoy your weekend.

Absence/Dismissal Procedures
In the event your child is absent from school due to illness/injury, please provide written documentation to our Data Manager, Amy.Laddin@ucps.k12.nc.us Either a doctor’s note or written parent note is required to excuse the absence. A phone call to the school, stating your student is absent, is not necessary. Remember, parent notes will only be accepted during the current 6-week grading period, of the absent day.
Early Dismissal Procedure:
On the occasions that you need your student to be dismissed from school early, please send in a note stating the time of dismissal with your student. The note must include the first and last name of the student, date, time of dismissal and parent signature. Students should bring the note to the front entrance/office area before the school day begins so they can be given an early dismissal pass to leave class at the appointed time. The student is then able to leave class, without disrupting instruction, and come to the front office. The student in turn will wait at the front office, until the parent/guardian presents the driver's license at the door. At that time the student will be released.
Please contact Ms. Laddin with any attendance questions or concerns.
8th grade news:
Eighth grade parents of students going on the DC field trip: your student should have brought home a letter explaining how to pay the remaining balance for the field trip. All balances must be paid in full by Feb. 1st. (link to website: https://www.wetravel.com/trips/weddington-middle-school-washington-d-c-kannapolis-tours-washington-35457837). If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s homeroom teacher.
The next Beta Club Meeting is Wednesday, November 2nd before school or after school. Information about meeting time and service projects is on the Beta Club Canvas page. Beta Club members should be checking the announcements regularly for updates and communication.

- Football this Saturday is at Parkwood! Come out and support your Wildcats--Tickets sold at the door, cash only! Football has gotten off to a quick start and we are at the mid point of the season. - Cross Country wrapped up their season Thursday at McAlpine Park. Many of the athletes have beaten their personal best times throughout the season. We are very proud of the runners!
Our Varsity Volleyball team is 10-2 for the season so far with losing only 4 close sets. We have lost to Marvin once and split with Cuthbertson. We have 2 games left in the season until the end of season tournament on October the 15th. We are currently in second place and hope to go into the tournament as the 1st or 2nd seed. These girls have grown together as a team and support one another on and off the court. We are excited to finish out the season strong!
Our JV Volleyball team is 8-4 for the season. All games have been close and came down to only a few points. All of our losses have been to strong teams from Marvin, Cuthbertson and Sun Valley. The team is filled with all naturally athletic girls that have come so far from the beginning of the season. We are hoping to compete with the best in the end of season tournament.
- Tennis has jumped out to a 6-1 start with their only loss coming against Marvin. They played Marvin Thursday with the idea of getting revenge. The coaches are extremely proud of the teams dedication and hard work throughout the season.
- We are having a great inaugural season of Field Hockey at WMS. We have two teams of 19 girls each. Many are learning to play field hockey for the first time. They’ve learned a lot about the sport in the past month and a half, and it has been fun to see how they are developing as team players and putting new skills into practice on the field. They’re a great group of girls, and as coaches, we are super proud of all they are accomplishing this season and for representing WMS well!
