MCCHS FRIDAY FOCUS
26th Edition: March 24, 2017
Pilgrims on the Way of Truth
April 3rd marks the beginning of the 4th quarter: a fresh start! We return to "Polo Season" (see information below) and the gradebooks create a clean slate for all our students academically. As the weather warms up, a sense of restlessness creeps into our school. "Senioritis" isn't something just afflicting our seniors! If the school year is a race, it's never advisable to slow down or stop just short of the finish line. On the contrary - now's the time to double-down and use that last reserve of energy to make your personal best!
Our teachers are diligently grading all quarter exams, and auditing all grades. As you know, the ParentPortals closed for viewing just prior to exams, but will be back up and ready for viewing on Wednesday, April 5th.
If you haven't taken the Principal's Coffee survey already, please do so! We want to schedule a 4th quarter meeting time that can include as many parents as possible.
Finally, you'll notice that today's newsletter contains TWO WEEKS' worth of scheduling and announcements. Since our office will be closed next Friday, we felt that taking a one-edition rest from the newsletter was in order as well!
A Note from the Administrative Team...
In his 2017 World Day of Peace message, the Pope writes, "In 2017, may we dedicate ourselves prayerfully and actively to banishing violence from our hearts, words and deeds, and to becoming nonviolent people and to building nonviolent communities that care for our common home."
We, as believers in the Catholic faith, need to continuously remember this in all we do. As adult role models for our youth, each one of us has a grave impact on the youth of today. Everything we say, everything we do, speaks volumes to our students. At this point in their life, though, they are branching out, listen to other points of view through TV, radio, and social media. We can no longer control everything they see or hear, but we can help them navigate through how to interpret it, based on our Catholic values and beliefs.
Unfortunately, some of those points of view occasionally bleed into the walls of Marian and a student might say something that is hurtful or discriminatory. This has been happening both in person and on social media. As the Marian community, we need to work together to ensure that students check their points of view, putting it through a sort of Catholic litmus test to ensure that the climate and culture of our school does not get tarnished and people get hurt.
We are sharing this so that you might consider taking time to talk with your students about what harassment, intimidation, and bullying are and how it affect others. It is important that your student understand that there is no place for these types of behaviors at our school either in person or through social media venues. Although the students were reminded of the school expectations at the beginning of the year, please review pages 25-26 of the 2016-17 student handbook that references these behaviors. These pages mention various forms of intimidation, harassment, and bullying, but it is not an exhaustive list. We will be adding ethnicity and religion to the list in the 2017-18 handbook. It also mentions the potential consequences for a student who behaves in this manner.
As you talk with your student, have them recall that Father Doyle set the theme of this school year as “I am MC; We are MC.” Through his homilies, he has continuously reiterated that when we, as individuals, practice being responsible, compassionate Catholic citizens both in our school and community, we are also building a positive, compassionate culture at our "common home" at Marian. Please help us to remind your student that the “I” in our theme reminds us that everything “I” do and say will be a direct reflection of what “We” as the Marian community will be seen as.
It is up to us, the entire Marian Community, to lead by example and, as Pope Francis reminds us, to "build [peace] day by day through small gestures and acts".

News & Announcements:
PROM INFORMATION IS HERE!
Prom 2017, Lumières de Paris, is scheduled for April 28, 2017 at The Cotillion in Palatine. Our Junior Class Advisors and Officers have been working for months to make this combined Junior/Senior Prom a truly memorable event. Linked, please find the Prom Information Letter containing all the details you'll need to start planning your perfect Prom evening! We will also have this letter linked to our school website. All forms linked within the letter will be available in hard-copy in the school office beginning April 3rd, but please feel free to download them and get a head-start!
"Polo Season" Begins April 3rd!
Beginning April 3rd, we enter back into "Polo Season" with our MCCHS Uniform Policy, which means all students are required to wear either the long or short-sleeved polos (tucked in at all times) with a belt. Students can also wear the uniform pants or uniform shorts. Boots are no longer allowed this season. If you haven't checked out the new uniform jacket additions, please do so! This is a great option now for students who prefer them.
Also - please respect the shoe policy and make sure that all shoes worn are of solid construction all the way around the foot: no "slides" or mules, please. This is simply for the safety of the student. See our visual guide linked above for more info on that.
Finally - young men are required to maintain a short hair-length and be clean-shaven at all times at school, as per our long-standing policy. Spring break is a great time to take care of haircuts!
Mentor Applications for 2017-2018 Now Being Accepted!!
The MC Mentors are beginning their selection process for next year. As you know, students are selected by the faculty to serve in these very important roles. This year we are starting the process with an open invitation/ application for all current sophomores and juniors. Students who are interested are invited to complete a typed application and return it to room 216 no later than Tuesday April 4th. That is the Tuesday after spring break. Only those students who fill out the application will be put on the teacher ballot. From those students, 30 sophomore boys, 30 sophomore girls, 30 junior boys and 30 junior girls will be selected by the faculty to serve as Mentors for the 2017-2018 school year. For more information, see the letter attached to the application. If you have questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Littner at llittner@marian.com.

Junior Year Boot Camp Available THIS SUMMER!
Any student who has graduated can share with you what educators have known for years - junior year is a rough one. Students start thinking about college, the course work becomes even more challenging, standardized tests, and prom..it is no wonder they stress out. Based on parent demand, Mrs. Hilton and Mrs. Littner are offering a Junior Year Boot Camp to help soon-to-be juniors begin to prepare for the rigors and stress of next fall. Attached you will find a letter which will give you details about the content, dates, and cost of the camp, as well as a registration form. This camp will be held from June 12-June 15th. We are limiting the class to 25 per class, so register early and mail it to the address on the form. Please make sure you put “JUNIOR BOOT CAMP” on the envelope as we have many camps going on this summer.

Reminder about 2017-2018 Registration:
If the student wanted to enroll in an AP class, but had not made the $95 payment (required for each AP class) their print-out would not reflect that choice; rather, another arbitrary course selection would be in its place. (For example, if the student wanted to take English AP Lit, but had not paid the $95 for this course, the "default" course would be English 4.) In this case, as soon as the fee is paid, the class will change to reflect enrollment in that AP class. Please know that the sooner the AP fee is paid, the better the chance that your student will secure a spot in that class. If the AP course fee is not paid by April 4th, which is also the course change deadline without charge, then to enroll in the AP course would require both the $95 AP fee as well as the $30 course change fee.
2016-2017 FINAL TUITION PAYMENTS DUE APRIL 15TH!
Please remember that your 2016-2017 tuition must be PAID IN FULL by April 15th. You may pay the tuition in person during school office hours, or CLICK HERE to pay online.
Interested in Taking Community College Courses During High School? Please read this important message!
Students who are considering taking a course at their community college this summer should be aware that it cannot be anything that is required by Marian Central for graduation. You will need to meet with your counselor to get permission to take a class and to possibly get high school credit for it, too, in addition to the college credit that you will be receiving. Typically the colleges also have a form that you must fill out and bring to your counselor to sign giving you permission to take the class.
McHenry County College's registration for summer classes opened on March 13th. The information you will need to enroll in one of their classes for summer can be found by going to http://www.mchenry.edu/runningstart/index.asp.
Elgin Community College's registration for summer classes opens on April 17th. The information you will need to enroll in one of their classes for summer can be found by going to http://elgin.edu/students.aspx?id=406.
Harper College's registration for summer classes is already open. The information you will need to enroll in one of their classes for the summer can be found by going to http://goforward.harpercollege.edu/start/highschool/concurrent.php.
Please contact our Guidance department should you have any questions or concerns!
Doing Any Grocery Shopping? Be Sure to Grab THESE LISTS!
We are continuing our Charity Season by launching the second annual "Shelter from the Storm" Pantry Drive April 3rd - April 10th. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, this is a THREE-SCHOOL EVENT, where NHS students from Woodstock, Woodstock North, and Marian Central work together to fill every shelf of our area food pantries. To make the greatest impact, our school is once again dividing the shopping list between all clubs and sports teams. Can you imagine if every student brought in just five items? Please take a look at these recommended shopping lists, and encourage your students to get involved in making a real difference in the lives of others within our community!

It's been said that the days take forever, but the years go by in minutes. One minute, you're a freshmen and the next, you're selecting your graduation announcements! The Senior Student Council is collecting your favorite photos from high school to put together the popular SENIOR VIDEO that is shown at the Senior Breakfast. If you have pictures that you would like to be included, please submit them to Ms. Gallagher by April 30th. You can email photos to kgallagher@marian.com or send them to the school office in an envelope addressed to Ms. Gallagher. Please make sure you include your full name on the inside of the envelope and label each photo on the back with your student's last name. All photos will be safely returned to you as soon as they are scanned. All photos are due by April 30, 2017 either via email or through the school office.
Remember - the photos should be from Freshman-Senior year, and connected to Marian events or with Marian-affiliated activities (dances, sports, clubs, etc.)
Marian's Hurricane Spring Teams Off to a STRONG START!
This past week, many of our Spring Sports teams kicked off their season's competitions. Our Varsity Softball team rallied in the final innings to beat Boylan 4-3. Seems that final score was popular that same evening, when our Boys Varsity Baseball also clinched a 4-3 win over Christian Crossroads...also with a dramatic rally in the final inning. Our Girls Soccer team defeated Johnsburg 4-1 in their home-opener! All of our teams are displaying such strength and determination, no matter what the scoreboard is at the end of each game. And our fans are also showing grit and dedication as they layer-up and cheer from the frosty sidelines! We pray for a successful, joyful, and injury-free sports season for all our participating athletes!
Principal's Coffee Survey
Please take a minute to complete this survey regarding the Principal's Coffee. We are continually working to create a schedule that includes as many parents as possible, so your feedback will really help us determine a date/time that will work best for our 4th Quarter Coffee!
