HAPPY BIRTHDAY SECOND GRADERS!
Winding Down with 2018
Happy December! We are so excited to be spending the last month of 2018 with our students! As the year comes to a close, so do many different units of our studies.
We will continue working on nonfiction texts in our reading. Text features, finding answers within a text and tackling tricky words are a few skills we have recently focussed on with our readers. Keep in mind to fill out those Book It! calendars to track your student's reading. If brought back, you can get a free pizza from Pizza Hut for every month!
We are full swing into writing like scientists. After many weeks of experiments (thank you to everyone who donated!), we are ready to expand our writing and publish some final reports. Your child gets to pick their favorite experiment that we have done so far and extend their explanations of why things happened the way they did.
In Language Workshop, the essential question for our thinkers is "How do we discover new ideas?" We have read about one little girls' 11 experiments that failed, the invention of the bubble gum, earmuffs, the slinky, and the water gun. For many students, it has raised great questions and even some ideas of their own for the next best invention.
These mathematicians have truly been surprising us with their thoughts and understandings as we tackle concepts like graphing, geometry and fractions. Most recently we have been working hard on identifying different shapes by counting sides, vertices and faces.
That just about wraps up what our learners are doing on a daily basis! Please do not forget to return permission slips for the Polar Express movie showing that will be happening the day before break. You can send your child to school in PJ's with a small stuffed animal. It should be a fun day for all!
