PENN PRIDE: we have. we are.

A COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS

Students: Can you subitize? Subitizing is the ability to 'see' a small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting.

Staff: We had another great afternoon of learning about Math and effective strategies. Each grade level team is choosing a strategy or routine to study. Math instruction will be a focus for our professional development all year.

Say Cheese!

School pictures will be taken on September 25.

Info and envelopes about ordering pictures were sent home with students today.

Picture Day is this Tuesday, Sept 25th.

All students have their picture taken.

If you wish to order pictures, the envelope and money must be turned in Tuesday morning.

Panther PRIDE on the march at the Liberty Homecoming Parade

Wednesday, September 26 @ approximately 6:15 at Liberty High

Penn students and their parents or guardians are invited to walk in the parade Wednesday night. We will be meeting in the Liberty parking lot at 5:40. The parade begins at 6:15. Look for the Penn signs and banner to join us. Wear your Liberty or Penn shirts and of course, candy to throw is welcome!

Tuesday we will be meeting at 5:30 at Penn to create signs to carry in the parade. If you would like to join us we would love the help. Please bring poster board and markets if you are able, we will also have some to share.

GROW SOMETHING Garden Group

Penn's Grow Something Garden Group is changing. This year we are going to meet weekly to mulch, weed, tidy, pick, observe, and learn. This fall we will meet every Monday from 6:30 - 7:30pm by the garden shed, on the playground, to help our school garden and grounds. Families, students, and community members are welcome to attend. All children should come with a supervising adult. A PTO volunteer will be on hand to share information, tools, and delegate tasks. Please note that the building will not be accessible and that we recommend that you bring work gloves and wear close toed shoes. See you starting 9/17. Have questions? Contact pennpto@gmail.com

Opportunities to visit school

You may be wondering about, and looking for, the date for our traditional fall open house. We have decided to replace that event with a new event this spring. We're still working on the details ... including the date. We are excited about our vision. In the meantime, parents, thank you for your great support at the Back to School Ice Cream Social. We had a great turnout!

Please consider joining our community for these upcoming events:

Liberty Homecoming Parade on Sept. 26

Costume Parade at Penn on October 31, at 2:00pm

Parent Teacher Conferences in November

Healthy Snacks!

Some reminders about the the district wellness policy. You can read the policy and administrative guidelines at: https://www.iowacityschools.org/Page/1167

You can see the list(s) of examples of foods that are acceptable to share with other students for classroom celebrations or classroom snacks at: https://www.iowacityschools.org/Page/1165

A few things to remember:
1. All foods that are brought for classroom snacks, classroom celebrations, etc. must meet the Smart Snack Guidelines.
2. No home-baked foods for classroom celebrations or classroom snacks (to prevent exposure to food allergens).

So, you might want to go on a field trip or volunteer at school ....

Would you like to become a volunteer at Penn or another school in the ICCSD? Or are you looking forward to helping with a field trip? The district requires that this form is filled out and that a background check is completed before anyone is allowed to volunteer or chaperone in the district. The application includes giving permission for the district to have the background check done. This process may take a couple weeks, so getting it done now will insure that you're approved when a field trip opportunity arises.

Behavior Reports

Remember the dreaded behavior reports on duplicate paper? We have done away with that format! We heard from parents that you'd prefer a more personal communication. So, this year, information about behavior problems will come to you directly through a phone call or email. This year, if your child has a behavior challenge, someone will be calling you. Teachers will call about minor behavior challenges and Mrs. Heffner (principal) or Jess (School Facilitator) will call for major behavior challenges. We'll fill you in on details of the incident and then we'll talk about next steps. We're looking forward to this closer partnership for addressing challenges. Thanks for your support.
