Tax Levy
At the Annual Meeting on September 6th, the public voted to approve Whitefish Bay's recommended 2023-24 estimated tax levy of $19,521,711, which was based on the state-regulated revenue limit within the school funding formula.
At the October 24th Regular Business Meeting, the School Board approved an amended budget. This amended budget increases the state aid amount (from that approved at the Annual Meeting) by $652,198. The net result of the adjustment will decrease the projected tax levy (Annual Meeting estimate was 2.39%) by $358,290 for the school portion of the tax levy. The final/actual tax levy increase for the 2023-24 school year is 0.51%.
How is the Tax Levy Calculated?
"A district's revenue limit is the maximum amount of revenue that may be raised through state general aid and property tax for the General, Non-Referendum Debt and Capital Expansion Funds," according to the Department of Public Instruction. Each year, the revenue limit is determined by the state. In six of the last eight years, the state has not provided an increase to the revenue limit, despite increasing costs due to inflation. All school districts must stay within the revenue limit each year.
The state provides some funding for public schools, referred to as state equalization aid. The property tax levy is determined by subtracting state equalization aid from the revenue limit.

Fall Theater Production: Radium Girls
In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.
Come join us for this important historical battle for justice!
