From Colleges & Careers Counselor Joni Martin
I wanted to remind you of upcoming SAT and ACT testing dates. If you are planning on applying to colleges next year, it is very important to take the SAT and ACT this year. You do not want to wait until next year to take the SAT or the ACT for the first time because college applications open up August 1. Colleges will accept either the SAT or the ACT- they do not require both. We recommend taking the test that includes the essay/writing part as some colleges may require the writing section. We also encourage students to take the SAT/ACT more than once because many colleges super-score.
Also take advantage of the send official score reports option to colleges when registering for the tests because most institutions require test scores to be sent from the testing companies and will not accept them off the transcript. It is best do this when registering for the test(s) rather than waiting until after your scores come back as fees for sending scores to colleges can add up.
Please see below for a list of SAT and ACT dates remaining this year. Visit www.act.org and www.sat.org for more information.

FBI Youth Leadership Academy
On July 8, 9, and 10, 2019, the Indianapolis Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association will host the FBI Youth Leadership Academy (YLA). The YLA is designed to promote an educational experience that will provide students with valuable leadership training and a greater understanding of the FBI. Through interactive physical challenges and classroom discussions we seek to further explain to youth how the FBI addresses the concerns of the community. Utilizing FBI strategic planning techniques and exercises, participants will have the opportunity to hone their decision making and leadership skills.
This two day, two night residential event will be hosted at Bradford Woods, Indiana University’s experiential learning center. Bradford Woods is located just south of Mooresville, on State Road 67. Its 2,500 acres are dedicated to the enrichment and education of youth and adults from all over the country. Students will be housed on site, and chaperoned by FBI personnel. Students will arrive on Monday, July 8th at 9:00 a.m., and will depart on Wednesday, July 10th at 10:00 a.m.
We would like the YLA to be comprised of top-notch students from a variety of high schools. Candidates must complete the enclosed application, which requires a signature from both a parent or guardian and the principal. Applications will be reviewed and 20 students will be selected to participate.
To be considered, the candidate should:
- * have completed their junior year, and not yet completed high school by 7/08/19;
- * have a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale);
- * possess qualities of leadership, scholastic achievement and good citizenship;
- * commit to attending the entire program; and
- * write an essay of no more than 500 words depicting their interest in the program and how it will enhance their future plans.
Completed applications and essays should be mailed to: Kathryn Sipes, Community Outreach Specialist, FBI Indianapolis, 8825 Nelson B. Klein Parkway, Indianapolis, IN 46250. All applications must be received by April 1, 2019.
Parents and/or guardians do not have to be present for the sessions. Students must arrange their own transportation. There is no cost for students to participate; lodging and all meals are included.

Senior Year Immunizations
Student Health – Immunization Requirements
Senior year is creeping up slowly but steadily! There are some immunizations that must be handled before the start of their 12th grade year. If your junior is schedule to have a physical in the next few months, please discuss with your physician the timing of these required immunizations. Some insurances will not cover two physicals within twelve-month time span, and so you may need to get your student caught up on these shots now. Beginning in 2014, all students are required to update their vaccinations for grade 12.
Requirements are:
●Hepatitis A (2 doses) now required for grades 4, 6 and 12
●HPV has been added as a recommendation for grades 6-12
●Annual influenza has been added as a recommendation for all ages.
●Meningococcal MCV4 second dose is still a requirement for grade 12.
(Please note: Meningococcal Serogroup B (MenB) has remained a recommendation for grade 12.)
Please do not hesitate to contact our Clinic staff with any questions or concerns. They can be reached at (317) 852-2258 Ext. 1503 or by emailing relam@brownsburg.k12.in.us or mcarrel@brownsburg.k12.in.us

Camp Healing Tree - August 23-25
Camp Healing Tree is a special weekend camp for grieving children and teens ages 7 to 17
Do you know a young person who would benefit from a weekend of grief support, encouragement and enjoyable activities? Camp Healing Tree is an opportunity for grieving young people to be with friends their age who have also had a loved one die and share the big feelings, thoughts and changes they experience through grief. By connecting in peer-based age groups, kids and teens find relief in knowing that they are not alone on the journey of grief.
Established in 1995 by a team of devoted volunteers and community supporters, Camp Healing Tree became a program of Brooke's Place in 2018. Under the supervision of professional staff, the camp utilizes over 100 screened and trained volunteers to provide a safe, supportive environment to share one's grief through a variety of expressive activities.
Although the camp focuses on grief, there are many fun activities for campers to enjoy, such as swimming, arts and crafts, games, campfire, group discussions and outdoor adventures. Activities are facilitated by supportive volunteers to gently teach coping skills and build self-esteem and trust. While the camp environment is rustic, the cabins are modern and air-conditioned. A registered nurse will be at the camp at all times.
Camp Healing Tree, located on the west side of Indianapolis at Jameson Camp, Inc., begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and concludes after the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service for the camp participants and their families on Sunday.
Camper Registration Process
Step 1 - Submit Camper Application Form Here
- Step 2 - Receive follow-up communication from Camp Registrar within 5-7 business days

- First-time applicants will receive confirmation of camp registration after the registration process is complete.
- Returning applicants should still complete the registration process as early as possible in order to be placed on the camp wait list. Returning campers will receive notification of registration for camp after August 1.
Brooke's Place offers additional support group programs and therapy services for grieving children, teens, young adults and their adult caregivers. To find out more, explore the Programs tab on our website or call our office at 317-705-9650.
