PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Tiger Families,
Welcome back to West Newton for the 2021-22 school year. Whether your students are participating remotely or in the building, we are excited to be back together and ready to learn! If you are new to our school, we are happy to have you as part of the family and look forward to getting to know you! Please join me in welcoming our new staff members featured below: Miss Erika Hoffmann, Mrs. Courtney Ca’they, Mrs. Starla Johnson, and Miss Kaci Kinnaird.
It was wonderful to see and meet so many of you last night at Back to School Night. I encourage you to keep in close communication with your child’s teachers this school year by phone or electronically. Parent Square is our main form of parent communication with families, both from teachers and the school. I encourage you to download the app (see instructions below). Please keep us updated with any changes in email or phone number so that we can have strong home-school communication.
Just a few reminders:
iPads need to come back to school each morning fully charged. Also, please wipe down the iPad with a disinfectant wipe.
Thank you for sending a mask to school with your child for the bus ride each morning and afternoon. An extra mask in the backpack is a good idea as well. Masks are optional during the school day, but required on the bus.
See reminders below about COVID-19 symptoms and thank you for doing your part at home to screen children for symptoms before sending them to school. If your child is a close contact or tests positive for COVID-19, please call the school.
Have a wonderful weekend!
With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. LeMay, Principal
Social Emotional Learning
Welcome, back to school, West Newton Tigers! We have had so many challenges in the last year. But while we have been challenged, we have also discovered within ourselves the capability to respond to events in ways that will yield positive outcomes. I am so excited to continue my role as Social Emotional Learning Coach for the 2021-2022 school year. I will keep supporting your students as they learn how to regulate their emotions and respond to adverse events in constructive ways.
Teachers of all grade levels will continue to teach with a social emotional learning curriculum called Second Steps. Second Steps helps to promote academic success, school connectedness, and a safe and respectful school climate. It also hopes to prevent antisocial or inappropriate behaviors, peer rejection, and impulsivity. Units of teaching will cover the following:
Growth Mindset and Goal-Setting
Emotion Management
Empathy and Kindness
Problem Solving
Second Steps provides opportunities for you students to learn proactive strategies to handle challenging situations and emotions. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher or me if you would like more information about Second Steps. I am looking forward to a wonderful year!
Sincerely,
Sara Whitman
Social Emotional Learning Coach

CAR RIDER PROCEDURES
Thank you for your efforts to ensure our car rider line is running smoothly! As a reminder, please use both the right and left sides of the lower parking lot. It would be best to join the shorter line to prevent back-up on Mooresville Rd. Please pull up so that gaps are not left between vehicles.
During arrival and dismissal, the buses park in front of the school. Students may not be dropped off from a car at the front of the school during arrival or picked up there during dismissal. Please follow the procedures outlined below for car rider drop-off and pick-up at the back of West Newton, Door 10.
AM Arrival:
- Car Riders
- Please enter the car rider line through the lower parking lot off Mooresville Road. We are not to block Hayworth Road, so please wait at the bottom of the hill until you can proceed all the way to the top. Do not try to enter the car rider line by entering Hayworth from Mooresville and making a U-turn.
- In the lower parking lot, please join the line on the right or left side of the lot (either side of the cement medians). Cars will take turns merging into the access road that leads to Hayworth Road.
- Drop-off is from 7:20-7:40 a.m. Students will not be able to exit vehicles until 7:20 a.m.
- The first car must pull all the way up to the first red pole by the blue sign.
- The next 2 cars need to pull up to the second and third red poles.
- Please have your child ready to exit your car when you pull up to the sidewalk area. Once the school door (10 South) is open, the first three (3) cars are to unload. For safety, students need to be ready to exit the vehicle on the passenger side and parents should remain in the vehicle.
- In order to expedite unloading, please watch for an adult to wave your child out of the car once you have stopped by the sidewalk.
- Please do not hold up the car rider line by having last minute discussions, signing papers or waiting to be first in line.
- Please wait until students are on the sidewalk before pulling away.
- Students will line up inside the school the hallways and then be dismissed to classrooms at 7:30.
- Once the bell rings at 7:40 students are considered tardy and must enter through the front doors and come through the office to sign in.
- Car rider dismissal will begin at 2:20 p.m. at Door 10 South on Hayworth Rd. (same route as AM)
- If your child is not in line when we begin loading cars we may ask you to pull forward.
- Once buses pull out of the parking lot, the back door is closed and students will need to be picked up in the office by coming to the door to get them.
- We request your patience, as we expect a larger number of car riders this year. We will move the line as quickly as possible while student and staff safety will be our first priority.
- Please ensure your car rider sign is displayed in the windshield.

A NOTE FROM THE NURSE
Please make sure your child has a water bottle in school at all times. Due to covid-19 regulations, water fountains have been disabled and the only way your child will be able to receive water is during lunch time and/or filling up their water bottles at particular locations within the school. Ailments such as headaches and stomach aches are often times related to lack of water intake. It is very important that your child stays hydrated throughout the day in order for them to get the best learning experience they can. Thank you all for your understanding and help in keeping our Tiger cubs safe and healthy!!!!!
