A Note From Mrs. Garrison
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) today released its 2019 state accountability ratings for approximately 1,200 school districts and charter schools. Districts and charters once again received A-F ratings, but new this year are A-F ratings for individual schools. The A-F system has remained consistent with last year’s system. As in 2018, districts, charters, and schools are given an overall rating based on performance in three areas:
- Student Achievement shows how much students know and are able to do at the end of the school year.
- School Progress shows how students perform over time and how that growth compares to similar schools.
- Closing the Gaps shows how well different groups of students within a school are performing.
A-F accountability uses a variety of indicators such as graduation rates, college, career and military readiness, SAT/ACT scores, and college prep course completion. The majority of a district’s rating is based on indicators other than the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test. Our school's 2019 Campus Accountability Summary has been posted on the Powell website. Use the link below to see the summary.

Girls on the Run
This fall, Powell Elementary will once again be a site for Girls on the Run (GOTR). GOTR will be open to girls in 3rd and 4th grade. It is a program that inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind!
GOTR is a 10-week program where girls develop essential skills to help them establish lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. During the program, we also focus on the importance of teamwork, healthy relationships, and the role they can play in positively affecting and shaping our world. The girls will influence their community through a service project and physically and emotionally prepare for a celebratory 5K event!
The fall season begins the week of September 9. We meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00. Mrs. Owens will be talking to the 3rd and 4th grade girls about GOTR in PE class next week. If you are interested, please go to www.gotrgreaterhouston.org to get more information and register your daughter for the fall. We are looking forward to a great season!
District Art Show Open House is September 7th from 11am - 3pm at the Sadler Administrarion Building.
James Cotham, Lena Gillis, Mika Pucan Yalung, Holland Slocum and Rachel Sorensen will represent Powell Elementary on September 7, 2019 at the District Art Show. This is quite an honor as over 1000 works of art were submitted for the selection process. The art work will be displayed at the Administration building for the 2019-20 school year.
