Principal's Bulletin
Week 3: September 6-9, 2022
Jerry D. Allen Elementary School
Message from Mrs. Zagala
Dear Allen Families,
I want to thank you all for another great week of learning! Students and staff have been working hard this week. As we begin to dig deep in to the grade level content, we continue to practice routines and procedures with our students. Next week we will begin our Success For All (SFA) reading program. Students from 1st-5th grade will be assigned a reading teacher at their own unique reading level and from 8:30-10:00 AM daily students will go to their reading class and receive instruction on their level. Students in PreK and Kindergarten still receive SFA reading instruction with their homeroom teacher.
We have sent home copies of the Campus Handbook with our students, we ask that you please review the handbook and sign the parent acknowledgment and return it to your child's teacher. Also linked in this bulletin you will find our Campus Handbook. If you have any questions regarding the handbook please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or to a campus administration.
There will be no school on Monday, September 5th in observance of the Labor Day holiday. I hope that you enjoy your three day weekend. I look forward to seeing all of our eagles back at school on Tuesday, September 6th.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Zagala
Principal
Morning Meetings
Morning Meetings are just as important as any other part of our school day and require that students arrive at school each day on time. I encourage you to ask your child what they learned at their morning meetings this week.

September is Attendance Awareness Month
Attendance is essential to school success, but too we do not realize how quickly absences — excused and unexcused — can add up to academic trouble. Did you know that chronic
absence — missing 10 percent of the school year, or just 2-3 days every month—can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing courses and ninth-graders dropping out of high school?
We are here to help and want your child to be successful; but, if they are not in school we cannot teach them. Making sure that your child come to school each day and on time will help your child be more successful. We understand that sometimes your child may have an appointment, but even early outs contribute to learning loss.
If you have any questions or need any assistance with your child's attendance please reach out to us. We are here to support our community!

Dismissal Procedures
We appreciate your patience and support as we continue to implement our new dismissal system. For everyone’s safety, students will remain in the building until there is someone here for them. To ensure that our system works smoothly, we ask that all parents, guardians, and caregivers remain in their vehicles and drive through the pick up line for their child. Remaining in the pick up line will minimize the congestion in the front of the school and will allow us to get the children to their cars more efficiently. Parents that “walk up” to pick up their child are likely to wait longer in the weather elements than the parents that remain in their vehicles. Please make sure that your car tag with your child’s unique code is easily visible in the front of your windshield. Parents that walk up to pick up their child(ren) are also asked to present their tag to the staff dismissing students.
Any students that are not picked up by 3:15 PM will require a parent or guardian to pick them up from inside the building and sign them out.
Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Forms
Northside ISD is required to collect student data (TEC 39 for Texas state requirements and ESEA sections 1111 and 1116 for U.S. Department of Education requirements) to determine the disbursement of state federal funds (ESEA section 1113). This information will be used by Northside departments to help evaluate, fund, or determine programs that may benefit your child. Programs that benefit individual students who qualify may include: grants,
scholarships, Summer School tuition, testing fee waivers, financial assistance with health services and/or other government support services.
It is very important that we have 100% parent completion of this form. The form can be accessed in the link below.
If you have any questions regarding the form, please contact Ms. O'Connor at 210-397-0800.
Safety is Top Priority
As Northside ISD prepares to welcome back staff and students for the new school year, we want to make you aware of several guidelines in place at all of our schools. Visitors to our campuses should plan and prepare for increased security measures. Please be patient and expect to be asked where your visitor badge is (if not wearing one) and your reason for being in the building. Some points to follow and be aware of:
● Always enter through the main entrance (security lobby for all elementary schools).
● Be prepared to provide your credentials, license, and/or identification card and reason for
entering the building. A visitor badge will only be provided after getting clearance through
Raptor or a records review.
● Always keep your visitor badge visible for staff to see.
● If you are regularly in the building (visiting your child’s classroom, going for breakfast, or
volunteering) please visit with campus administration for completing a background check
While in the building if you “see something, say something” – whether it be to your child’s teacher or any NISD staff member wearing a NISD issued badge. NISD also has a SafeLine (210-397-7233) to report any suspicious behavior 24/7. We have two police officers at every high school, one at every middle school, and additional officers that patrol elementary schools. Additionally, we have numerous security cameras in all of our buildings and school buses. That being said, it takes ALL of us to be safe.
Please review our Back To School website that provides additional information including a link to our district safety page. For specific information regarding procedures for Meet-the-Teacher, PREP Days, or First Day of School, please visit your campus web site. We remind you while these changes in practice may be inconvenient, they are made with the safety of your child in mind. Thank you in advance for your patience.
