Function-Based Thinking

Students need to receive the right intervention, so it's important to know why they are engaging in concerning behaviors. Behavior is functional: students use behaviors to get what they want or need.

What are the functions of behavior? In general:

  • To get something: attention from others, access to an activity, a sensory stimulus, etc.
  • To escape or avoid something: a social situation, a person, an activity, etc.

For more on this topic, check out our Tier II Training module #3, Function-based Thinking.
