Reading
I recently sent home the last reading assessment the students took over Comparing and Contrasting Fiction text. This should be in trappers for parents to review with their children at home. We have been working on reviewing our skills with inferencing with nonfiction text before MAP testing began this week. We have continued to practice how to pair our own background knowledge with information from the text to help us make an inference about what the author is trying to communicate in the text..
The last day to take quizzes towards 4th quarter Accelerated Reader goals will be Friday, May 24. Your child’s Accelerated Reader goal for the 4th quarter can be found written on a post-it notes in his or her planner. Goals were communicated and set the week before Spring Break. Students on Team Silver will need to continue to work on reading at home and at school toward their 4th quarter AR goals. I am encouraging the children to read at a good pace and to read carefully to help them have success on their AR quizzes. The children must pass their quizzes in order to receive points toward their goals on the books they read. The point value awarded for the book also goes down with each question missed on the quiz. Students on Team Silver are given time in class to read during Reader’s Workshop but are also encouraged to read at home to help them work toward their AR goals. Students in 5th grade will receive a “W” for work in their planners for AR goals not met by the end of the quarter.
In order to help encourage students to meet their AR goals and reading goals I am asking students on Team Silver to read for at least 20 minutes a night at home for homework to help them make progress in their books. I am asking students to read for 20 minutes at home at least 5 nights a week. This is the main homework the students will be focusing on for ELA during the year other than working on writing projects or other projects that might need more time to finish.
Writing
We have been working on finishing our Feature Articles and have continued to examine strategies for incorporating text features into our pieces in order to make the information presented more engaging to the reader. This will be our last Writing unit of the year.

social studies
We recently finished our unit of study on the Causes of the American Revolution. Tests were passed back to students to take home to share with parents this past week. We have now begun to explore key battles and events in the American Revolution as well as some of the struggles that the new nation faced as they fought the war for independence. We will also begin to explore how the new nation a democratic government. We will be testing over this unit after MAP testing is over. I will be sending a study guide for students to use to help prepare for the upcoming test over the American Revolution next week. Students can also use study guides and notes that we have completed in class to help them prepare for the upcoming test as well. The Revolutionary War project was due Friday. May 10. Students who have not turned in the project by this time will receive a letter in their planners for late work.
