From the Principal's Desk
As we head into the last three weeks before winter break, you'll see from the calendars below that we're firmly in the season of winter performances and preparations for the winter holidays! Every class has a music informance to show families what students have been learning to date and the 5th grade American Jazz and Musical Theater program is culminating with a performance. 4th and 5th grade classes will also be taking field trips to see the Nutcracker as performed by the Westside Ballet at the Broad Stage this week.
At the end of the week, we're hosting Learning Rounds. Learning Rounds are a kind of collaborative professional learning -- an adaptation of the medical practice of clinical rounds, with teams of mixed experience and expertise sharing observations. Our focus will be the area of our School Improvement Plan (SIP), increasing the use of active learning strategies in our instruction as a means of increasing student engagement and language development. Observers describe the learning they have seen and the effect on learners and then discuss how we might use those observations to improve learning. For these learning rounds our team of walkers will include both site and district staff observing our learners from K-5th grade. Other learning rounds will have teams of diverse teachers.
Students have been doing a great job working on safe and respectful behavior at lunch, recess and in the hallways. As a fun way of encouraging each other to "do the right thing" and celebrate behaviors that uphold our school rules, Student Leadership Council created Golden Eagle Tickets. The Council also decided that no one can ask for a Golden Eagle Ticket and that the actions have to be spontaneous and not planned. Staff have been enjoying celebrating those observed behaviors with Golden Eagle Tickets that are going into a box in the library and those tickets are mounting up! Student Leadership Team decided on a Crazy Hair and Hat Day to celebrate the students' accomplishments -- on December 14. See below for some possible hand-made crazy head-gear! In the spirit of the Copa Mundial, consider a hat celebrating your favorite team! If you'd like to help your child's class make Crazy Hats contact their teacher.

Health and Safety
Health Precautions
Please make sure to use the Covid test kids distributed before break to check your student's health before returning to school on Monday. And watch for any symptoms associated not only with Covid but that may indicate RSV or the Flu. All are extremely contagious and community transmission rates are high right now. Keeping students home when symptomatic is the best way to slow down the spread. Masking indoors is also a really good idea right now to protect against all three viruses. While Covid spreads primarily through the air, the RSV virus can live for hour on surfaces, utensils, and hands, making handwashing and sanitizing especially important. Thank you for taking precautions to keep students and staff healthy!
Announcements
Help Edison Keep Title I Funds: Complete an Application for Free or Reduced Price Lunch:
Edison's Title I funding is tied to the number of students who qualify for free and reduced price school lunch. The state of California is now providing school lunch for free to all students, but the funding mechanism for Title I has not changed. We are in danger of losing our Title I funding -- not because the number of eligible children has declined but because few families have filled out the application this year. Not only do these funds pay for critical Spanish reading intervention services, but most of our technology programs, safety/computer/garden supplies, and more are funded with Title I money. We have only a few days to get the number of applications up. Just one form per family ensures continued funding to support students. The deadline to submit the 2022-23 form has been extended – but only until Nov. 30, 2022 – so time is of the essence. Please take a few minutes right now to complete the application at this link:
https://bit.ly/SchoolBenefits22-23
If you need help filling out the form, please contact Community Liaison Jessica Hernandez for help (310) 828-0335 ext. 61-306 or jessicahernandez@smmusd.org. Form must be submitted by Wednesday, November 30, 2022.
