A MESSAGE FROM MRS. FORD
April has been busy for the Dummer Parent Group, which hosted our annual Grandparent Bingo and Daddy/Daughter Dance. As always, there was a lot of participation and excitement around these events. The Parent Group also held the Mother/Son Bowling event on April 29th and 30th at Idle Hour Lanes in Sandwich. The Parent Group donates much time and energy to help the education and well-being of our children and staff, and we are very thankful! The parents have been an awesome asset this year, and we hope to continue this tradition for the 2017-2018 school year. The last Parent Group meeting will be held on May 9th at 6:30 p.m. in our Multi-Purpose Room in Dummer. Everyone is invited to see what we are all about and to start planning for next year.
The fourth grade participated in their end-of-the-year field trip to Science and Industry while the fifth grade attended the Civil War Encampment. Fifth grade also were able to tour the middle school in preparation for next year. On May 2nd, the 5th grade band will hold its last concert of this school year, in the Middle School gym. Please contact Mr. Aska with any questions you may have about band in the middle school. He will be of great help.
Traditionally, one of the busiest months of the year is May, and this year it is going to be CRAZY with activities. The Character Counts Club will be traveling to Feed My Starving Children on May 2nd. The incoming fourth-graders will be touring our building on May 10th, 11th, and 12th. The fifth-graders will be visiting the Burpee Museum May 15th and 16th. Our St. Baldrick's event will take place on Thursday, May 25th in the afternoon with activities happening all month long to earn money to help cure childhood cancer. We end the month with a Perfect Attendance celebration and Straight 'A' Cookout. Let's not forget Track and Field Days and the 4th grade electricity projects. Wow, I hope we make it until June! Our last day of school for students is May 26 with dismissal at 1:10 p.m.
I would like to thank everyone for another great year. We could not do this without the support given from your homes and from the outstanding dedication and hard work from all of our teachers and staff at Dummer School. Our children benefit greatly because of this! We look forward to working with you in the future and wish you all a safe and wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Lynette Ford
Principal,

NEWS FROM OUR NURSE
FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
Have a wonderful summer break!
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
To help fifth graders prepare for entering middle school next year, we ended the month of April with a middle school tour. At the end of the tour, students had opportunities to ask sixth grade teachers questions about what to expect next year. It is always interesting to hear what the students are concerned about.
Everyone, hold onto your seats because the last month of school is packed. After a short break from testing, there are only two more MAP tests scheduled for the first week of May. YEAH! H.E.D. has been fortunate to have a DARE officer visit fifth grade classrooms. Students are learning how to be prepared for potential obstacles they may encounter. Prior to DARE graduation, May 11th, students will create DARE posters and write DARE essays. Each fifth grade class will have two lucky winners announced at graduation, one of each category. The middle of the month is booked with the fifth grade field trip to Burpee Museum along with track and field day. In addition, fifth graders will be studying the Civil War in Social Studies. Quoting accurately, drawing information from multiple print and digital sources, and determining meaning and tone of literature continues to be the focus in reading. Math classes will continue to work on graphing ordered pairs on a coordinate plane, classifying two-dimensional figures, and preparing for sixth grade. Finally, to end the year, St. Baldrick's is scheduled for the last week of school. What a fantastic way to end a wonderful school year!
The entire fifth grade staff would like to wish you and your family a fun and enjoyable end of the 2016-2017 school year and upcoming summer break.
MUSIC NEWS
Fifth Grade has been learning how to play harmonicas and the history of them as well. So far we have played folk songs that most students know in addition to some that have been popular in the folk-rock scene. Last week we started "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young. Overall, students have been doing very well and participating. We will wrap up the year by playing "Love Me Do" by the Beatles and use garage band to record our progress.
5th Grade Band is preparing for our final concert of the year on Tuesday, May 2nd. Students will be playing pieces from their book as well as one song from sheet music. With summer rapidly approaching, Junior Regiment will also be starting soon. If you would like more information regarding this fun experience, please ask your son or daughter to bring home a summer schedule and permission form.

BOOK FAIR COIN CHALLENGE
At the end of each day an announcement was made as to which class was in the lead. On the last day, Mrs. Winckler's 4th grade class pulled ahead to win with a total of $126.49 collected.
All 4th and 5th grade classes, combined, collected $773.20! The money will be used to buy new books for our classrooms and our library. Scholastic matched the amount we collected and made a donation to literacy charities such as Kids in Need Foundations, Reader to Reader, Inc. and National Center for Families Learning. Great job Dummer students!
