Do you have November 7 on your calendar?
Tuesday, November 7, 2017, is election day. If you would like to vote early, absentee voting is available at the District Office, 10 Civic Center Plaza, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents of Mankato Area Public Schools will vote on an Operating Levy and the election of three School Board members.
As a result of our Operating Levy expiring on June 30, 2018, our School Board has proposed to increase its referendum revenue authority. This proposed authorization would include an increase of $365 per pupil and would increase each year by the rate of inflation and be applicable for ten years beginning with taxes payable in 2018.
The most common question we hear is, “What will the money be used for?” The dollars go to people, programs and day-to-day operations. Here is a link to our Q & A article which will help answer that question. This is an exciting time for our growing school community. Funding will help us to continue our work and provide the resources we need for the education of each child, retaining and recruiting staff and our daily costs.
Please visit the District website www.isd77.org under “quick links” where you will find more information about the operating levy, a tax impact calculator for your property, and candidate information.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact the District Office at 507-387-1868 or email maps@isd77.k12.mn.us.
Was Walk-A-Thon Successful?
YES! Ask any student, teacher, or parent attending Walk-A-Thon and the answer is yes, it was amazing! The weather couldn't have been better and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time walking the half-mile route around the school. Parent volunteers held up lightsabers to make a tunnel along the route, while bubble machines blew bubbles elsewhere on the route. Special appearances by the Mankato Firefighters and Public Safety officers, Mankato State University Cross Country members, Muttnik, and Freddie the Falcon made the event that much more fun. The students and teachers showed Team Franklin spirit through their clothes, accessories, signs, and chants. It was so much fun!

Have you talked about School Board Policy 501?
School Board Policy 501 describes how schools keep a safe environment free of weapons. Outlined in the policy are the obvious things that outside of school students are not allowed to use or only with adult supervision, but it also covers items that fit into the category of toys.
There is the potential for a problem if a student places a toy gun or rubber knife in the pocket of their coat and then brings it to school. It can be a confusing situation for students as something they have permission to use outside of school is forbidden at school.
Please take a few minutes to talk with your child about the importance of never bringing any of the items outlined in the policy to school.
To read the full policy, use this link.
Is Franklin looking for playground supervisors?
What is the theme for October 11 Theme Day?
On Wednesday, October 11, students and teachers get to have fun with a school-wide theme day of Crazy Mismatch Day. No need to match on Wednesday, as silly hair and clothes will be the theme. The kindergarten students in Mrs. Blaschko's class selected this theme as part of their prize for being the class that raised the most money for the Walk-A-Thon last week.
What is Franklin Festival?
This year we take the idea of a fall open house to a whole new level, as we move Franklin Festival to October. Plan to attend this fun Franklin event on Friday, Oct. 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Play games, eat food, see friends and teachers, and explore Franklin Elementary! Rain or shine! Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the WOW! Zone Food Truck.
Youth who want to play games for prizes can purchase wristbands for unlimited game play. Note: Wristbands are NOT required for all activities. Wristbands allow youth to: play 11+ games for prizes (as over 2000 prizes last), enjoy face painting and temporary tattoos, access to three inflatables, and eat one $.50 popcorn for free.
Wristbands are $10 at Franklin Festival or $8 through Pre-Sale. Adults and children under 3 do not need wristbands. NEW: To keep costs down, no family will be charged more than $20 for wristbands, so if you have two children or 6 children, we would love for you all to attend. If you need more than two wristbands for the children in your family, please note how many you need on the pre-sale sheet and $20 will cover all your family's wristbands.
How do I help Franklin turn "trash into cash"?
While we won't have our students out do any additional fundraisers this year, we do want to continue with our collection programs that essentially turn "trash into cash." We raise over $1700 a year by submitting Milk Moola lids/bag tops, Hy-Vee receipts, and Box Tops for Education. That's money for what might be considered garbage or recycling!
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION: October and February are our big Box Top for Education collection months, as we work to submit them before the fall and spring check deadlines. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents to Franklin. You should have received information on the program last week. Please do not feel pressured to buy items with Box Tops for Education, but if you do have them, please clip and submit Box Tops by October 16. The class to collect the most Box Tops picks the November school-wide theme day and gets a traveling trophy for their classroom. The class with the most participation gets to pick the December school-wide theme day (ties will be decided by random drawing). New this fall, a student can donate a dime to count toward classroom participation, so you don't feel pressured to purchase Box Top items.
HY-VEE RECEIPTS: Our local Hy-Vee stores will donate $1 for every $150 spent in the Mankato stores. Please submit receipts dated 9-1-17 through 6-1-18 to the collection container across from the school office. Receipts are tabulated monthly and Hy-Vee issues checks for every $100 earned, so please turn in receipts as you are able.
MILK MOOLA: We collect lids and bag tops from Kwik Trip's Milk Moola program, as we receive 5 cents for each one submitted. We appreciate if milk lids/bags are rinsed off before submitting them to the collection container across from the school office. Fifth graders will help in counting Milk Moola this year and lids are sent in as we fill a large box.
Want to give a shout out?
We are inviting families to email Mr. Olson when their child(ren) have a successful experience outside of school. The celebration will then be included in the morning school wide announcement. Ideas of things that families might want announced: winning a soccer tournament, moving up to a new tae kwon do belt, participating in the regional science fair, etc. If you have something that you'd like us to recognize your child(ren) for, email tolson1@isd77.k12.mn.us:
