Hernandez Happenings

Hernandez Middle School an IB Middle Years School

April 8, 2019

Hernandez Mission

We will nurture and challenge all students, empower diverse thinking, facilitate the collaborative exchange of ideas, and encourage authentic engagement in the classroom, community, and global society.

Hernandez Vision

It is the vision of HeMS to work collaboratively with parents, teachers, and the community to guide students to be their own HERO by exhibiting Honesty, Excellence, Respect, and Ownership in every situation, every day.

IB MISSION

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Message from Dr. Ephlin, Principal

Spring is in the air! We are now in the final six weeks of the school year and while students are preparing to end the year we are preparing for next school year. We have been busy working on the master schedule, planning professional development opportunities for teachers when they return in August and preparing for our newest Bulldogs. One way we are building community for our students is by implementing a new group on campus; 8th grade Ambassadors. These Ambassadors will help transition incoming sixth graders and make them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their middle school experience. These students will be trained as mentors and will lead small groups of sixth graders through team building activities, and tours of the school before school starts. Applications will go out soon to our current seventh graders so that they can apply for this leadership opportunity.

Celebrations

Hernandez Heroes

Hernandez HEROes are honest, demonstrate excellence, show respect, and take ownership every day in every situation.

Choir Earns Sweepstakes at UIL

The Hernandez Middle School treble and tenor/bass choirs performed at the UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation on Wednesday, April 3rd. Both groups received the highest possible rating (Superior) from all judges in both concert and sight reading, earning each a Sweepstakes designation! We're very proud of all of the hard work students have done to prepare for this. We're also thankful for our band director Mandy West, who accompanied the treble choir on flute. Choir is directed by Dr. Martinez.

What is IB?

IB stands for International Baccalaureate. The IB is celebrating their 50th year in education and has over 4,000 schools worldwide. It began as a program to provide educational continuity for military and expat families that were moving around the world and wanted a rigorous academic program for their children that would remain constant regardless of the country.

The Middle Years Program (MYP) at the middle school level are both an overlay to the district and state aligned curriculum. Each one focuses on the development of the whole student with TEN Learner Profile Traits, and its goal is for students to gain a global perspective while fully participating in their local communities.

Fostering Success

Be a HERO

Here at Hernandez we teach our students to be a HERO. HERO stands for: H-Honesty, E-Excellence, R-Respect, O-Ownership. Students can be a HERO everyday. In the hallway students show they are a HERO when they:

  • walk and talk
  • keep to the right
  • keep electronics and headphones put away
  • manage time
  • keep hoods off
  • keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
