NAMI Presentations- 6th Grade ONLY
Our 6th graders will have the opportunity to experience “Ending the Silence” presentations put on by the National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI) on Wednesday, March 22nd, and Thursday, March 23rd. These presentations will take place during Tiger Time.
In the Ending the Silence presentation, a lead presenter shares an informative presentation and a young adult with a mental health condition shares their journey of recovery. Both presenters share their own lived experience either as an individual living successfully with a mental health difficulty or someone who loves and supports someone living with a mental health challenge.
The goal of these presentations is to spread a message of empathy and hope to encourage students to actively care for themselves and for their peers, by reaching out for help, encouraging a friend or family member to seek help, and reducing stigma. The goal of NAMI’s “Ending the Silence” is to create a generation of students who are well-positioned to end the silence and stigma surrounding mental illness.
Topics include:
Signs and symptoms of mental illness and suicide (NAMI presenters will be sensitive to the age of our students when discussing these topics)
Statistics on how mental illness affects youth
Personal perspectives on the experience of living with mental illness
Recovery and coping strategies and resources available
Ways to seek help for themselves, or someone else
Ways to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness
How COVID has impacted us and how to cope with our mental health as we move on
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our LIS Office Team.
