St. Mike's Matters - Thursday Notes
November 30, 2017 Issue #11
Dear St. Michael Families,
Fr. Jim spoke to our students about the importance of concluding or ending things well at MMO on Monday. He reminded us that any competition or race is finally won at the end and not at the beginning. Since we are currently at the end of our liturgical year as we head towards the first Sunday of Advent in just a few short days, Fr. Jim called us to finish spiritually strong. I trust that our students have heeded this important call this week by being especially attentive to their prayer lives. What an important message as we transition into the season of Advent.
The theme of finishing strong also has clear academic implications this time of year, since our first trimester ends on December 8th. It is especially important that our students work hard and do their best work to conclude this first trimester, and then get off to a good start the following week to open the new trimester. The excitement, joy, and anticipation of Advent and the holiday season should be channeled towards a renewed sense of focus and not distract from all the great learning happening in these coming weeks! Thank you for sharing in the school lives of your children, talking to them about what they are learning, and supporting their ongoing spiritual and academic development during this time of year and always!
After reviewing applications and conducting interviews for our open Administrative Assistant position, I am pleased to announce that we have found the best fit for this multi-faceted role. Our part-time Stewardship Development Director, Roberta McGill, will now move to full-time by serving as an Administrative Assistant. In addition to conducting her Stewardship Development Director responsibilities, Mrs. McGill’s Administrative Assistant duties will allow her to assist our school through utilizing her background in communications, database management and finance.
Thank you for your support of our Thanksgiving Basket drive sponsored by the Middle School Saint House of Saint Maximillian Kolbe. Through this special faith in action project, our school community created and delivered 31 baskets to families in need throughout Thurston County! The kindness and love shown through your generosity is such a blessing to the basket recipients. Thank you for participating in this very special stewardship project alongside your children.
Blessings,
Connor Geraghty
Principal

Stock up on SCRIP before you go Christmas shopping!
The scrip sales are up but we still haven’t reached our goal of full participation in the monthly Scrip Club, and our office sales are below where they need to be to fund and subsidize various activities throughout the school year (including Field Trips).
In order to help spur sales, we are going to have a contest! At the end of November, the classroom that has the most Scrip Club participation will win a donut party. In order to make things fair, families that join (or have already joined) will receive a point for each of their children’s classrooms.
Try it Friday!
Our next "Try it Friday" item is Rosemary Garlic Roasted Potatoes featuring rosemary from our Kindergarten Garden!
“Try it Friday” is a once a month event where ALL students will have the opportunity to sample something yummy from the kitchen. The samples will be a possible new menu item or an existing menu item. Students will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire. All "Try it Friday" samples are free!

She said yes!!
As we kick off the Advent season, the Edgers reflect on the meaning of the annunciation and what Mary's "yes" meant to the world when she said she would be the Mother of God. Join EDGE Middle School youth group as wait like Mary for the coming of Jesus. Edge meets every Sunday after Lifeteen Mass in the Parish Multi-purpose room at 6:30pm.
St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE) at St. Michael Parish
St. Michael Parish has launched a new and exciting ministry called St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE). The focus for this is evangelization outreach by proclaiming the good news of Gospel of Jesus Christ as well as inviting folks to attend St. Michael Parish by meeting them on the streets and in the public square of the City of Olympia.
This outreach proclaims the Gospel in a non-confrontative way to those who will lend a listening ear. This follows our Church’s call to the New Evangelization that calls each of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. The focus of the New Evangelization calls 1) all Catholics to be evangelized and then 2) go forth to evangelize.
As part of this we will also be doing evangelization outreach on the campus of St. Michael Parish to include St. Michael School and St. Vincent de Paul. You will soon see volunteers offering holy cards and rosaries, prayer and an invitation to attend mass at St. Michael for those who don’t already, on our parish campus. This will be done in a non-confrontative and respectful way.
If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Mario Villanueva at mvillanueva@saintmichaelparish.org and 360-292-7104 or Brandon Jones at bjones@saintmichaelparish.org and 360-292-7108 at the St. Michael Parish office.
