The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of April 30-May 4!
Message from the principal
At last week's professional development meeting, a UHS faculty member was treated to a special recognition for being an outstanding educator. Members of the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce came to present UHS Biology teacher, Katie Bunce, with the Urbandale Educator of the Year Award, presented each year to an outstanding teacher in Urbandale. Mrs. Bunce's husband along with the entire UHS teaching staff as well as members from the Urbandale Chamber were on hand to surprise Mrs. Bunce with this recognition (picture below).
Below is an expert from our nomination for this well deserved award. Special thanks to Associate Principal, Dania Wilson, for collaborating on this nomination for Mrs. Bunce.
"Katie routinely supports students to help them find success. She was not satisfied with any students failing her class so she created a system for students to continue working to meet the learning targets of the class, even after the semester had ended. She sets high standards and then supports students in reaching those standards. Katie revamped her class structure to better support student learning and to keep students engaged. This included regular notes home to every student about their progress and opportunities in class...Throughout this last year, Katie has been an advocate in the community highlighting the need for passing the bond referendum. Even with two young kids at home, Katie puts in tireless hours focus on not only her classroom, but the Urbandale Community School District in general."
Congratulations to Mrs. Bunce, an Urbandale educator very deserving of this wonderful honor!
At UHS, we are fortunate to have so many wonderful teachers and staff to care for students and develop their learning. As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7th-11th, please consider reaching out to UHS teachers to share your words and expressions of appreciation for all they do for our students.
I am truly grateful for their service to our students and community as a whole.

Student Announcements and Day 1/ Day 2 for the week
This week Monday, April 30th is a Day 1. Tuesday, May 1st, is a Day 2. Block days are a Day 1. Friday is a Day 2.
Exciting changes ahead in 2018-19 to enhance student learning!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS will be rolling out some exciting changes to support student learning. School will still start and end at the same times as it does this year. We will continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we are creating time in the school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to guarantee students’ access to teachers for additional help and extended learning. We are reallocating time from 5th period (currently 11 minutes longer than all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time on those days to create additional time in the schedule.
Look for additional information in coming weeks.
