5 Essentials Survey
Parents
According to this week's report we've had approximately 23% of eligible families complete the 5 Essentials survey. Thanks to all who completed the survey. Many have not, we still want your feedback. As one Facebook user noted, when finding the Murphy survey, you need to identify the county that the school is in, not the county of your residence. Murphy is in Kendall County.
If you like the work that we do, fill out the survey. If you don't like the work we do, fill out the survey. If you like some things and not others, fill out the survey. I took the parent survey for my kid's schools. I think it took maybe 5 minutes apiece. Please give us your feedback. The survey is open until mid-February. This survey is not limited to 1 response per household. Both parents are welcome to complete the survey. Thank you in advance.

Ms. Borneman - Math
To practice factoring perfect square trinomials students are each given half a heart and have to find the equivalent expression. I call it finding their perfect math match.Collaborative study groups: Students used their mid-chapter check worksheets to help identify concepts where they needed additional assistance. Their peers asked level 2 and 3 questions to help guide their thought process.
Ms. Waldron - ELA
My 7th grade ELA class used Costa’s level of questioning to create a quiz over chapters read in Tangerine by Edward Bloor. After they created the questions, the students had to answer one question of their choice. The students were required to provide text evidence when responding to the question.

Elyssa’s Mission 8th Grade Presentation 2/12
Murphy Junior High partners with Elyssa’s Mission (a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention) to provide depression awareness and suicide prevention training for our students as part of the Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program (SOS).
The SOS® program teaches our students the ACT message if they hear someone talking about hurting themselves or others: Acknowledge, Care, Tell. Please talk with your students about the importance of reaching out to a trusted adult in those situations.
The 2017-18 school year was the first year we implemented this program at all three grade levels. This year, and in following years, the full SOS® program will be presented to 6th grade and 8th grade classes. 7th grade will receive an abbreviated presentation from Student Services staff to review the ACT message. 6th grade presentations will occur on October 16th through Language Arts classes. 7th and 8th grade presentations will occur during second semester.

7th Grade Girls' Basketball Update
In the second game, the Mavericks jumped out to a first quarter lead. Both teams worked to move the ball through the rest of the game, but the Mavericks came away with a 35 to 14 victory. Riley was able to work for some good shots to pick up 14 points. while Shemiah was good for 12.
The 7th grade girls basketball team split a pair of games against Bednarcik Monday night. In the first game, the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead. Bednarick used a couple of Maverick mental mistakes to grab the lead. Both teams played hard to keep the game close, but Bednarcik pulled away for the 18 to 14 victory. Anya led the scoring with 6 points, while Riley added 4.
In the second game, the Mavericks were able to score early and never let up. The Mavericks had several players score on their way to the 35 to 12 victory. In the 4th quarter, Madison got hot behind the 3 point line to score 9 points. Emma Klosterman and Shyell were each good for 6 points.
The 7th grade lady Mavericks played a tough Plank team Tuesday night. In the first game, Plank applied full court pressure through the game. The Mavericks play great and were able to break the press pretty well to get some open shots and pull out to a lead early. Things got interesting when Plank was able to tie the score in the 4th quarter, but the Mavericks held on for the 18 to 15 victory. Riley led the scoring with 9 points, while Anya added 5 and Molly 4 points.
In the second game, Plank again applied the full court pressure. Again the Mavericks were able to break through for some good shots on their way to a 24 to 16 victory. Shyell and Shemaiah led the scoring with 8 points, while Zakayia and Alex each added 4.
