Seniors Get Ready for Decision Day!
Thinking about being an intern? Check out this Intern's Experience!
Talia Galbreath, Senior, Attending Elizabethtown College 2020-2021
How did your internship/service work enhance your education?
“This internship at Pleasant View Communities with the Rehabilitation Department enhanced my education by providing me a "real-life experience". I interacted with therapists, residents, nurses, family members, and other specialists. These interactions gave me opportunities to introduce myself, give handshakes, and form connections.
From recording the temperature of the hydrocollator to transporting residents, to sorting paperwork, to observe therapy sessions. What I completed every day at my internship had a purpose to help others and enhance my education.”
Why should students complete an internship/service work?
“Students should complete an internship because it gives us a chance to explore the real world. When we can explore we can make connections between what we learn in school and what we experience. My connection was between my AP Psychology class and a power scooter evaluation. In AP Psych we learned the term Neural Plasticity and that the brain can continually change and form new or repair old neural connections. The power scooter eval was with a resident who had suffered a stroke affected his right occipital lobe. During the evaluation, the resident did very well and I was able to talk with Jan Rowand OTR/L about how the residents continual improvement since the stroke was from the occurrence of Neural Plasticity. I was able to properly use a term that I had learned in a classroom in a real-world situation, and it was exciting, to say the least.”
How has an internship/service work helped you plan for after school?
My internship helped to confirm my plans of going to college to study Occupational Therapy and later become licensed and work in a geriatric setting.
