May the Fourth be with you - Connor
One of my favorite things about May is “Star Wars day”. There is no real origin to May 4th being Star Wars day, other than the classic pun “May the Fourth be with you”. This, however, is a great time to talk about the new Star Wars movie coming out this December. Here are a couple of reasons to be super pumped for it:
- Han, Luke, and Leia are back!
- 2. JJ Abrams, director of the Star Trek reboot as well as the famous tv show LOST, is directing the project.
- 3. LESS CGI! Abrams believes in promoting nostalgia by focusing on the iconic stylized prop effects from the original trilogy
- 4. A new villain who we know absolutely nothing about and has kind of a weird lightsaber, but hey! Bring it on!
If you are like me, this is all very exciting. Hopefully you took a moment out of your busy day to revel in Star Wars day. If not, go and check out the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You will not regret it, unless you are a trekkie.
Teacher’s day - Liang
May Holiday – Teacher’s day
Due to the fact that I used to be a teacher. I noticed that the teacher’s day is on the first Tuesday in May (May 5th this year) in the States. That whole week is Teacher Appreciation Week. It is the same week as the SU Ethics week.
Back to when I taught high school in China, I always felt happy on Teacher’s Day which falls on September 7th, because I would see a lot of my former students come back to visit me. A lot of them were already college students then. I got to know what had been going on with them and I enjoyed a lot as their middle school teacher.
Not until I came to the States did I know there is also a Teacher’s Day celebrated in the States, but it falls on a different day. Here is some history and interesting facts about teacher’s day all around the world.
Teachers' Appreciation Day is a day for students, parents, and others to pay tribute to teachers for their contributions. Some give teachers small tokens of appreciation while others make big gestures to show their appreciation.
Some students send teachers a card, a letter of appreciation, photo books, scrapbooks, and even billboard thank you signs to celebrate Teachers' Appreciation Day.
Some teachers are surprised with visits from former students, luncheons, awards, gifts, flowers, cake, gift certificates, and gift baskets.

Riley: Teacher's Day
5-5-2015 has to be a perfect day for showing appreciation to all of my instructors who have been giving me new ideas about life and work. The National Teacher Appreciation Day in the United States comes earlier than in Vietnam, which is November 20th. However, both bring a lot of memories to me.
As a matter of fact, teachers (instructors), in general, are the people you interact with the most, only after your parents, in the first twenty one years of your life. Therefore, it is important to note that your personality, your knowledge and your behaviors are influenced by them. Although, sometimes you receive terrible grades from some instructors, in the end, what you have learned is more valuable than that. You’ve learned to become a meaningful person and contributed your efforts to build a better society. In Vietnam, we respect out teachers as much as our parents because they are contributing their efforts to help you write your own perfect story.
Give your teacher a hug ^^
