"Your Thousand Oaks Police Department is part of the larger Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. There are ten incorporated cities in Ventura County. Five have their own police departments while five contract with the Sheriff’s Office for police services. There are several advantages to contracting the services, one primary reason is it is cost effective. There are many redundancies in law enforcement agencies, and by contracting services the city pays less for overall services because they can share resources with the other contracting agencies.
There are 90 deputies assigned to the city of Thousand Oaks. Nearly 40 of those positions are in investigations or other specialty units like traffic, Special Enforcement, Crime Prevention (Intelligence Led Policing) and School Resource Officers. The remaining 50 are assigned to patrol. They are split up over several shifts and days off, so our average daily patrol staff is around 12 officers, not including traffic and SROs. The city of Thousand Oaks is home to nearly 130,000 residents and during a typical day the population can swell to nearly 200,000 people.
In Thousand Oaks we have two Vulnerable Population Officers who work weekdays to bring services to those experiencing homelessness. These deputies work with county agencies, the veteran’s affairs administration, non-profits, and other no governmental organizations. The VPOs draw a balance between providing resources and enforcement.
We have three SROs in Thousand Oaks. They are assigned a primary high school and all of that high schools “feeder” schools, as well as providing any assistance to our private schools in the area. Our SROs are funded by the City of Thousand Oaks in our normal police budget. The School District does not pay anything for the SROs. So if you ever wondered if the schools are not doing something because they are paying for police, that is not true. The purpose of our SROs is to develop relationships with our students, teachers, parents, and administrators. It is our goal for our community members to understand that we are not here as the enemy. We are here to keep everyone safe and be a resource for anyone in need.
Police and School partnership. For those who have had the opportunity to go through the Stand Proud program… did you know that the program was originally funded by the Thousand Oaks Police Foundation as an effort to bring harmony to our schools. The training which is not only an anti-bullying program, but one that is founded on the idea that we are all connected and truly eliminates barriers and allows for greater diversity and inclusion. A local counselor came to Chief Pentis and I at the time and asked for help in funding a program. The school did not have the funding to do it on their own, but we all saw value in the program. The Police Foundation agreed to pay for the first year at 100 % of the cost, the second year 75% and the third year 25% for a total investment of $200,000.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with the schools and having an SRO available on campus for any needs that our youth may be facing, or just to say hi."

Mental Health Safe Space Stickers
One of SDAC's main goals is to improve the mental health of our peers and create a safe campus space to express when we are having a difficult time. In the next few weeks, SDAC representatives will be training some teachers at the three primary High Schools and teaching them some of the ways students have benefitted mentally from their teachers. Once these teachers have completed our training they will receive a sticker saying that their classroom is a mental health safe space. If you see one of these stickers on your campus, know that this teacher wants to help you if you are in need of help, and don't hesitate to speak with them.
