The Vietnam War was a war over the spread of communism. America joined the war because it swore to protect democracy and South Vietnam was being threatened. The war was in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia and it lasted from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975. President Nixon pulled the U.S. troops from Vietnam when he was elected to hand the fight back to the South Vietnamese.
There was supposed to be an election to reunite the country in 1956, but the U.S. didn't agree because they thought the communist would win.
