Sex Education for School Aged Kids
This week, I’d like to share some resources on the topic of Sex Education for elementary aged kids. Below are a few good tips about how and when to start the conversations taken from Healthline:
Talk early and often
Pop culture tends to frame “The Talk” as a one-time event that’s as awkward for the parents as it is for kids. But is should really be multiple talks throughout the course of childhood and adolescence.
“The primary guidance we give to parents and caregivers is “talk early and often,” says Nicole Cushman, MPH, executive director of Rutgers University’s Answer, a national organization that provides comprehensive sexuality education resources.
The goal is to normalize sexual education when kids ae young, so talking about it is less intense when kids are older and there’s more at stake.
By having an ongoing conversation about sex, Cushman says, “it becomes a normal part of the conversation and takes the awkwardness out of it.”
“Making sex no big deal to talk about from day one will most like foster trust in you with your kids,” explains Elle Chase, ACS, a certified sexual educator. “This is very helpful when they want to come to you later with questions.”
A wonderful local resource is the website of Amy Lang (link below). Access free tips on talking to your kids at different ages and stages about all things sexual and check out her book guide arranged by age. Books are a great and easy way to get conversations started.
PTA Spotlight on Volunteers
Thanks this week to the all-female Room Parents who are pulling double duty this week organizing classroom Halloween parties and collecting donations for classroom baskets at the auction. Be sure to thank your room parent(s) and make their volunteer job as easy as possible. Everything the room parents do helps your child and all the students at North Beach.
What a night! The Harvest Carnival was the best type of chaos; full of family fun and games! Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed the night. The North Beach PTA and the Harvest Carnival committee would like to say thank you so much to the students and families who volunteered. Our students and families will remember this Harvest Carnival for years to come, and it is because of your hard work and dedication! Thank you for making North Beach Elementary a wonderful community.
Suggestions for future Harvest Carnivals? Please contact Beth Carman at bb.carman@greentab.net
Herbie is BACK!!!! The BIG GIVE Kicks off Monday, Nov 4!

November 12, General PTA Membership Meeting
Nov. 12, 6-6:30pm
At our first general membership meeting of the year, we will be approving the annual standing rules, discussing the PTA’s role, and answering questions you might have about what the PTA does for the school and how you can help. You do not have to be a PTA member to attend, but you do need to be a member to vote. In December we will also be having a general membership meeting to review and vote on some mid-year budget issues. Hope to see you at one or both meetings.
Attn. Watchdog Parents!

Honoring All Who Served. Do you know a veteran?
We would like to acknowledge the special people in our children’s lives who have served their country. We need photos of veterans from our school community, no matter what branch of service, conflict, or country served. These pictures will be on display at North Beach throughout November, beginning with Veterans’ Day school assembly on Thursday, November 7th. Include information on where the veteran served (e.g. US Army, WWII), your child’s name, and their relationship to the veteran.
Please email photos of your veteran to Sara Easterly at saraweasterly@gmail.com by Friday, Nov. 1st. If you submitted a photo or photos last year, you do not need to submit them again this year unless you have additions or changes.
Veterans’ Day Assembly | November 7th in the lunch room starting at 8:15 am. Please join us and bring your veteran family members, friends, or neighbors, too!
Attention 5th Grade Families
We are looking for 2-3 more parents who are interesting in helping out with fundraising for the annual Islandwood camping trip.
The fundraising effort helps lower the cost for all students, so it is a great way to get involved and help out in a tangible way. Also, most things can be done outside of regular business hours, so this is a good option for working parents as well! Duties may include the following:
decide on which fundraisers to do
print and distribute forms as needed
facilitate the Cake Walk at the winter dance
coordinate, and communicate, fundraiser details
keep track of funds raised
If you are interested in helping out, I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Board Games Needed
Do you have board games (with all their game pieces) that your kids have out grown or you want to upgrade? Ms. Gabrielson, our wonderful Art Teacher, would like to take them off your hands. To donate please leave in her classroom (room 15) or in the office. These games are going to be put to good use.

"How to Talk to Kids about Death" - Town Hall discussion Saturday, November 9, 2019, 7:30PM
How do you talk to kids about death? Author Caroline Wright wondered the same thing when she was diagnosed with an aggressive, terminal brain cancer as a mother to her young sons. She has written a children’s book to help children know the undying love of a parent, and she joins the Town Hall with a mission to help other parents find hope and agency with similar diagnoses. A panel of leading experts in the fields of children’s bereavement and cancer will join her to discuss the complicated issue of what to say to our kids to comfort them when facing loss.
