Reading
Monday
We are moving into a new genre of reading, Non-Fiction. Before we begin, we want to review the differences between fiction and non-fiction.
1. Click the link below to watch a video of Mrs. Brandon, a second grade teacher at Barnett, teach a lesson distinguishing between fiction and non-fiction texts:
2. A few ideas to practice establishing your purpose for reading are:
- Discuss whether each book in the picture below is fiction or non-fiction and why
- Create your own anchor chart on blank paper and use the words in the sort below to help guide your thinking
- Choose 10 books at your house or from RazKids, and discuss with a family member whether they are fiction or nonfiction and WHY.
3. Read Fiction & Nonfiction texts for 20 minutes on RazKids or Bookflix. While you are reading. REMEMBER:
- did you choose a fiction or non-fiction book?
- explain WHY you chose the particular books you read

Word Work - Review - Making Nouns Plural
This year at school and these past few weeks at home, you've been learning spelling patterns for making nouns plural. This week we will review those patterns one a day and then on Thursday, talk about some words that don't follow a pattern. These are known as irregular (ir - not regular) plurals.
The spelling patterns for making nouns plural that you know are:
1. To MOST nouns, add an -s
2. To nouns that end in -sh, -ch, -s, -x, or -z, add an -es
3. To nouns that end in consonant -y, change the y to an i and add -es
4. To nouns that end in -f or -fe, change the f to a v and add -es
5. Some nouns don't follow any of these patterns, irregular plurals.
Today, watch this video to review adding -s or -es to the end of a noun to make it plural.

Today you will:
1. Watch the introduction video by Ms. Hall, a second grade teacher at RJ Wollam on How-To writing.
2. Brainstorm a list of topics you could write a How-To about.
3. Pick one topic and create a front cover.
Be sure to include:

Math - Multiplication/Repeated Addition
PARENTS: Please take a few minutes to watch this video before starting this week of multiplication. In 2nd grade we DO NOT memorize multiplication facts or look at a times table.
Instead, we count groups of objects. This video will help guide you in teaching this topic.
Today we will learn how repeated addition connects to multiplication.
There are 3 groups with 2 hearts in each group. How many hearts in all?
3 groups of 2 hearts in each group is a total of 6 hearts
Activity
Read the following word problem.
Draw out the problem and create the repeated addition sentence just as the example above showed you.
Share with an adult
