News from Mrs. Wegman's Room
November 12th, 2018
Thank you!
I have enjoyed the conferences I have had so far and look forward to meeting with the rest of you this week! I feel very thankful to work with such great students and families here at Hoover!
Just a reminder there is no school this Friday, November 16th due to conferences and we will be off November 21-23 for Thanksgiving.
Book Order
I am sending home three book order forms today. These will be due back by next Monday, November 19th so I can place the order before Thanksgiving Break.
If you'd like to order online, please go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs.
Our class code is H84CH.
If you'd prefer to send in the paper order form, that is great as well, just be sure to include a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs with your order. Thanks!
Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
Last week in language arts we read the folktale How Chipmunk Got His Stripes as well as other folktales in our small reading groups. Our comprehension skill focused on understanding characters and using evidence from the text to support our opinion. This week we will read the information text called Jellies about jellyfish. Our comprehension skill will be fact and opinion. We will also learn about contractions and verbs in the past, present, and future tense. Due to conferences on Friday, our spelling test will be on Thursday this week!
Math
We are finishing up our fifth topic in math where we have been learning different strategies to subtract two digit numbers such as using a hundreds chart, open number line, break apart strategy, and compensation. These can be very tricky and the students are doing a great job with them! We will take our test this week and start the beginning of our next topic before Thanksgiving. In topic six, we will learn the more traditional trade-first algorithm for subtraction. We will start by using place value blocks to model numbers and decide if we need to regroup. There will be math homework on Tuesday of these week, due Thursday.
Science/Social Studies
We have wrapped up our Air and Weather unit in science. We will focus on social studies until our next science kit arrives. Our next lesson is about maps. Students will create a classroom map and go on a "treasure hunt" in our room. They will learn cardinal directions, how to use a coordinate grid, and design a few maps of their own!
