Spinal Cord Injuries
By: Grace Moore
Who Has Had It:
Where:
The spinal cord is the road for for messages sent from the brain to the rest of the body. If the spinal cord gets damaged those messages can not get through. This results in not having control over your own body, trouble breathing, altered temperature regulation and blood pressure.
When:
This disorder may occur at anytime after an accident.
Why:
A spinal cord injury happens when there is damage in the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal column. This is caused by any traumatic blows to the spine including accidents like car wrecks and gun/knife wounds.
How:
There is no way to reverse a spinal cord injury. Researchers are currently working on medications that one day may be the cure to this injury.
Fact:
Injuries are referred to as complete or incomplete, based on whether any movement and sensation occurs at or below the level of injury.
