A Message from Dr. Bearden
Thank you for taking the time to read the Hilltop Happening this week. Monday, March 30th, will begin our third week of closures due to COVID-19! SHE Parents, Students, and Staff are participating in virtual learning and we all are doing our best to keep children learning, while staying safe and (hopefully) healthy in our homes. We all are learning and we appreciate the effort and energy that parents, staff, and students are giving! Hang in there and continue to talk/discuss/question/etc. as we work together each day. Please reach out if you need anything.
I am starting our conversation with a few important links:

Digital Learning Platforms:
Thank you for your understanding and for candid, constructive feedback. Your input helps us to continue to fine tune the digital learning plans. The primary digital platforms used at SHE are Seesaw (K - 3), Microsoft Teams (3rd -5th), iRead (K-2nd), and iReady (K - 8th). All of these platforms are available on Classlink. While we considered transitioning to one platform for convenience, we want to continue to use the digital platforms which were used during the school year to ensure that students feel comfortable with the transition to learning virtually. In addition, any other digital applications, used for teaching, will be embedded in Seesaw or Microsoft Teams. We hope that having the communication in one place and all applications embedded in either Seesaw or Microsoft Teams (by grade level) helps to simplify your electronic delivery of lessons by week.

Student Information for Placement During 2020-21
As we start planning for next year, we need some information from you to assist with our class assignments and placement process. Please use the link at the bottom of this message if you have information about your child, which you think would be an asset to us when assigning class placement. While we cannot honor a request for a specific teacher, we do want to know the type of learning environment your child needs to thrive. Your child's teacher this year will also have a great deal of input as well. We are partners and want to work with you to best ensure a great learning experience for next year.
Melissa Herring, Curriculum Support Teacher, coordinates our class placement process using academic, social, and emotional information about each child. However, our student support team all work together to check that each child's individual needs are met!
If you have any questions, you can direct those to Ms. Herring, or another member of the student support team with whom you are familiar:

A Message for Rising 6th Graders zoned for Hopewell Middle School
Dear Rising 6th Grade Parents-
While there is a lot of uncertainty in the world today, one things is sure, we are excited to welcome our rising 6th grade students next year. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Rising 6th Grade Parent Night scheduled for March 10th. Given the day to day unknows, we are hesitant to reschedule this meeting at the current time. We will plan to hold a parent meeting at a future date. However, there are currently many decisions you as a parent are being asked to make based on scheduling timelines. You should have received Course Verification #1 from your elementary school on March 6th to review and approve. We have received many of these back and have updated changes.
At this time, we are asking you to once again review your student’s Course Requests for the 2020-2021 school year. This process will be completed through Campus Parent. While we are in uncharted waters, we would like to stress the importance of completing this process; we are depending on you all to help us. Please note, the courses that are currently requested for your student will be the courses on your student’s schedule for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to the complexity of the master schedule, we will not be able to make mass changes in August.
To view your student’s Course Requests, log in to Campus Parent. If you do not have an account, your student can access through their Student Portal in ClassLink. Directions are attached. April 3rd is the deadline to view your student’s Course Requests. This feature will be disabled in Infinite Campus to allow for the scheduling process to continue.
A few things to note: This is a verification of courses and is not your child’s actual schedule. The courses that should appear include the following: Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Homeroom, World Language/Reading and music (if selected). No general connections courses will appear until the final schedule is received on Information Day in August. If you opted for your student to take Math 6 Enhanced and he/she scored a Level 1 or 2 on Milestones, the math support class is required and noted on the schedule above (Math 6 Connections Enrichment). A course with .2 indicates a TAG course, 40 or 60 at the end indicates advanced, .9 indicates a team-taught class (students with an IEP), and .8 indicates a resource (IRR) class (students with an IEP). If your child is in the Services for Exceptional Children Program, course placement will be based upon your child’s most recent Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). If your child is not presently in this program, team-taught classes may not be requested. TAG placement is authorized only after the proper testing has been completed. You may not request TAG classes in subjects for which your child has not qualified.
IMPORTANT: If the courses you view are correct, you do not need to do anything else. If you need to request a change, please email Stephanie Sosebee, 6th grade AP and Master Scheduler, at sosebees@fultonschoos.org. We will consider no response as an approval of the 2020-2021 courses.
Below is a link to a narrated version of the PPT that would have been shared on March 10th. Please listen and review for important details. Please look over any issues with the narration of the PPT. I think we are all learning it is hard to work home without distractions. We have also provided a Spanish version of the PPT (not narrated). In addition, the handbook we provide each year is also attached. We hope to send home a printed version of the HMS Handbook with students at some point before the end of the school year.

If you have Hopewell specific questions, feel free to email Stephanie Sosebee, 6th grade Assistant Principal, at sosebees@fultonschools.org or David Susina, 6th grade Counselor, at susina@fultonschools.org. All information will be made available on the HMS website as well.
We look forward to meeting you soon!
