Smart Writingâ„¢ Across the Curriculum:
A Compliment to Your Writer’s Workshop
The demand required of a student’s reading and writing skills in response to a
Text Dependent Writing Prompt is similar to the demand required for a student to be
college career ready!
Who should attend: Principals, Curriculum Specialists, Literacy Specialists, & Teachers of Reading, Writing, Science, and Social Studies
Dates: January 14th- 3rd- 5th Grade Teachers
January 15th- 6th-8th Grade Teachers

You are invited to join April DeCesare, International Speaker, Principal, Curriculum Director and former Florida’s Teacher of the Year, for a one day workshop packed with practical strategies and easy to use tips for Reading & Writing Across the Curriculum! Each research based strategy is aligned with the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program, the Alabama State & Content Area Standards, and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Levels. This workshop is designed to meet the five key components of effective reading instruction and allow for differentiation and modification of content and materials to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Come and discover how to create a language-rich classroom environment with ample time for writing and reading practice! Participants will learn how to create common academic vocabulary, administer writing conferences, utilize formative assessments, keep students engaged, and boost students’ confidence with writing. Based on best practices and research, these Smart Writing™ Strategies will empower K-8 readers and writers to reach their full potential!

The purpose of this presentation is to build your capacity to integrate and infuse trauma-sensitive social and emotional learning strategies in your classroom. You will come away with doable and simple strategies to establish the positive classroom culture you envision and to keep it going all year. Strategies for building youth social and emotional learning competencies while maintaining an engaging classroom learning environment will be demonstrated.

IMPACT PD: Dual Language Learner Instruction for PreK Teachers
- Five engaging Online Professional Development Modules have been created from Dual Language Learner experts around the nation. Pre-K teachers are invited to participate in the third cohort of IMPACT-PD Online PD Module.
- Participants will develop an expertise in working with DLLs and their families, receive STI-PD credit (50 hours), receive a $300 stipend and may be eligible to receive UAB course credit.

NBCT Candidates in Action!
National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) Happenings
Earlier this month, all cohorts met in Cullman for a "Writing for National Boards" meeting. Teachers from all ten school districts showed up and spent time learning about the three types of writing for NBCT. We truly have dedicated educators throughout our region who are willing to spend the extra time to improve their practice, and this is just one example.
Upcoming January Meetings
January 11, 2020 - NBCT Component Make-Up Session This training is for anyone who missed any of the monthly meetings on the individual components and would like to get credit for attending so you qualify for the candidate support review during the months of March, April and May. The schedule is as follows: 9:00 AM - Component 2; 10:00 AM - Component 3; 11:00 AM - Component 4. Come for any that you missed, or you can come for all of them to get a refresher. This training will take place at the AMSTI/In-Service Center located at 1115 Hwy 31 South, Athens.
January 27, 2020 - NBCT Q & A/Technology Tips All cohorts (including the Lawrence County Cohort) will meet at the Morgan County Educator Resource Center from 4:30-7:00 PM.
