Week of January 17th

Quick Message from Mr. Roorda

Good evening parents.

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy a day in the snow/ice on Tuesday. It looks like the weather forecast for later this week may provide for a similar opportunity.

I know our teachers have been answering some questions regarding the difference between e-Learning and instruction during quarantine/isolation. Let me try to clarify:

When students are quarantined or isolated, our teachers are required to provide continuous learning to them. Most of the time this is accomplished through Zoom. The students access the link provided by the teacher and are a part of the classroom for the entire day.

On an e-Learning day, teaching is asynchronous - which means there is no live teaching happening. Teachers post work in Canvas or SeeSaw for the students to complete and are available from 9:00 am - 11:00 am to answer questions or provide clarification.

If you have questions or experience difficulty with any of this, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher. We have been working and preparing diligently to make the transition to these different learning experiences as user-friendly as possible. We appreciate all you are doing at home to help your child during these times.

Please continue reading to learn more about the new COVID Isolation and Quarantine Guidelines, PTO Spirit Nights, and preparations for Valentine's Day.

Stay safe and healthy,

Positive Test or Symptomatic Guidance – Students and Staff

Isolation is required for all positives regardless of vaccination status.

The recommended isolation period is 10 days from the onset of symptoms or from the date of the positive test if no symptoms are present. However, SCDHEC will allow students and staff to return early from isolation if they meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Isolate for 5 days from start of symptoms or from positive test date if no symptoms.
  • At least 24 hours since the individual had a fever without fever reducing medications.
  • All symptoms are COVID-19 are significantly improving.
  • Must wear a mask on days 6-10 of quarantine. If a mask is not worn, a 10-day isolation must be observed.
  • Students and staff will automatically receive a return date assuming the isolation period will be 10 days.
  • To request an early return on day 6, the Positive Student/Staff Early Return Form must be filled out and approved through the COVID Call and Processing Center. This form can be found on the district website.

Close Contact Guidance – Maximally Vaccinated/Fully Vaccinated

  • Maximally, or fully vaccinated, individuals who were exposed to someone that tested positive for COVID-19 and do not have symptoms are not required to quarantine unless they develop symptoms. A mask must be worn at school for the 10 days after exposure or individuals will be required to quarantine at home.
  • Individuals with a verified positive test within the previous 90 days also do not need to quarantine unless they develop symptoms but must wear a mask at school for 10 days following an exposure or quarantine at home.
  • Vaccinated individuals are recommended to get tested 5 days after exposure, even if they do not have symptoms, and they must wear a mask at school until 10 days after exposure even with a negative test.

Maximally Vaccinated Ages 18+: A close contact has completed their primary vaccine series of two doses of Pfizer or Moderna or a single dose of Janssen vaccine, including an additional dose for an individual who is immunocompromised, AND has had a booster shot if eligible.

Fully Vaccinated Ages 5-17: A close contact who has completed their primary vaccine series of two doses of Pfizer or Moderna or a single dose of Janssen vaccine, including an additional dose for an individual who is immunocompromised, more than 14 days ago.

Close Contact Guidance – Non-Vaccinated

The recommended quarantine period is 10 days. However, DHEC will allow students and staff that are identified as s close contact to return to school on day 6 after exposure if ALL of the following criteria is met:

  • Complete a full 5 days of quarantine.
  • No symptoms of COVID-19 during quarantine period.
  • Antigen (rapid) or PCR test is collected on or after day 4 of exposure and test result is negative.
  • Must wear a mask on days 6-10. If a mask is not worn, a 10-day quarantine must be observed.
  • Students and staff will automatically receive a return date assuming the quarantine period will be 10 days.
  • To request an early return on day 6, the Quarantine Student/Staff Early Return Form must be completed and approved through the COVID Call and Processing Center. This form can be found on the district website. Submission of a negative test result is required. At this time, only PCR or antigen (rapid) tests administered by a health care professional or pharmacy will be accepted.
  • Early return does not apply to athletics.

Planning Ahead for Valentine's Day

Based on the evidence that transmission on surfaces is very low, the recommendation is to allow parents to provide store bought items (food and valentines day cards) for Valentine’s Day parties if the following guidelines are followed:

  • All items must be store bought with a food ingredient label
  • Teachers are responsible for checking labels of all items to ensure that they do not contain allergens if they have students with allergies in their class (they may ask the nurse to verify if there is a specific question)
  • Parent volunteers/PTO will not be allowed in the building to help with these parties. VD parties are not considered essential events.
  • Individual goody bags will not be allowed as we do not have food label to determine allergens.
  • Students are allowed to give Valentine’s to each other.

Morning Drop Off

We will have Safety Patrol helping us unload students. Please make sure your child is ready to get out of the car as you pull up. Students should exit from the right side of the car if possible.

We are working on fostering independence in our students and discourage you walking your child into the building. However, please use the left lane and pull into our parking lot if you are still needing to do this for a few more days.

Afternoon Pick Up

Please have your "Car Rider" tag visible in your windshield so we may call your child's name. Stay consistent with the side you pick up on for familiarity and ease for your child.

Change in Transportation

If you have a change in transportation for your student, please notify the office in writing on the day of the change.
