Message from Mr. Roorda

Good afternoon!

We are extremely proud of our Pirates and how well they performed on their MAP tests this week! Many of our students met or exceeded their goal! If you haven't already done so, ask your student how he or she did on her MAP test. If you have questions or want to know more about the MAP results, please reach out to your child's teacher.

I want to help you plan ahead for a couple of days this month:

Friday, February 17th is an Early Release Day - Dismissal @ 11:15 am

Monday, February 20th - District is Closed for President's Day

Please read below for information about:

BOOK FAIR COMING SOON

Dear Parents and Families:

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. Hosted by our staff, this event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school.

After missing out on many beloved traditions, our spring Book Fair will be a familiar, welcome, and safe event for our students. Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from February 6-10, 2023 in the Media Center.

We will have a Book Fair Parent Night on Tuesday, February 7th from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Our Book Fair offers eWallet, a safe and secure alternative to cash. Simply create a free account to add funds and/or invite family and friends to contribute so your child can select their own books. Any unused funds can be spent at The Scholastic Store Online or to fund a future eWallet.

If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

If you would like to volunteer to help work the Book Fair, please sign up for a time using the following link:

We’re excited to celebrate our love of books together at the Book Fair. We look forward to seeing your child there!

Valentine's Day Reminders

Valentine's Day is approaching quickly and I know some of our teachers have reached out to you requesting assistance with treats and goodies. We want to make sure that everything brought into the school is safe for our students with allergies. Please read below for a few safety reminders:

Valentine’s Day is the only day that is exempt from the approved snack list as indicated in Policy ADF.

All food must be store bought with a food ingredient label. No homemade treats are allowed. If snack/individual size candy is sent in, the large bag or valentine box with the food ingredient label must also be available to review the food ingredient label.

Please be mindful that the Brach’s conversation hearts are manufactured in a plant that also has peanuts/tree nuts and dairy. These are NOT safe for our peanut/tree nut/dairy allergy kids.

IHES - A Unified Champion School

We are excited to share with you that our school is now a Unified Champion School via Special Olympics.

The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program is aimed at promoting social inclusion through intentionally planned and implemented activities, affecting systems-wide change. With sports as the foundation, the three component model offers a unique combination of effective activities that equip young people with tools and training to create sports, classroom and school climates of acceptance. The K-2 Building Bridges and a fifth-grade class have partnered together as Building Buddies and will be sharing with the school a Word of the Month. Each week we send out an email with a video clip of the students sharing a message relating to the Word of the Month. In addition we include a read aloud, discussion questions and a small activity that correlates with each word.

Please feel free to use the word of the month, read aloud and activity as you would like. Our thought has been to use during a morning meeting or two.

The Word of the Month for January is Individuality.

TARDIES

We do our best in the morning to keep our car rider line moving quickly. However, the volume of cars from 7:35 am - 7:45 am is significantly greater than our capacity to unload them before the tardy bell rings.

Think about leaving the house 5-10 minutes earlier to save the headache and frustration of waiting in line and the possibility of your child being tardy. There is little to no wait time from 7:00 am - 7:30 am. And with that extra time you have, you may be able to stop for a hot cup of coffee and snack at your favorite coffee shop.

UPCOMING DATES

2/6 - 2/10 - Scholastic Book Fair

2/17 - Early Release Day

2/20 - District Closed - President's Day

2/24 - Terrific Kid Ceremony

Get Involved with Your PTO

As we go throughout the year, there are many events and opportunities to get involved! If you decide to volunteer, please be sure that your volunteer card through RHSD is up to date. Volunteer Application Form. The background check does take a few days, so be sure to do it in plenty of time to be approved for any events you wish to participate in.

Thank you for strengthening our community this year! To continue to reach all our families, we have set up several ways to receive information from the PTO. Please share with your friends, neighbors & students so that we can connect with them!

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

Morning Drop Off

We open our doors at 7:00 am.

Safety Patrol students will continue to help unload students. Please make sure your child is ready to get out of the car as you pull up. Students should exit from the right side of the car for their safety.

Afternoon Pick Up

Please have your "Car Rider" tag visible in your windshield so we may call your child's name. Stay consistent with the side you pick up on for familiarity and ease for your child. Dismissal begins promptly at 2:10 pm. Please be here no later than 2:30 to pick up your child.

Bus Riders

If you have a K, 1st grade, or 2nd grade student, you must be at the bus stop to pick your child up. The bus driver is not allowed to let him or her walk to their apartment or house alone.

Connect with the Ride360 app to find out information about your bus routes.

Changes in Transportation

If you have a change in transportation for your student, please notify the office in writing on the day of the change. Per District Policy, we cannot accept text messages or phone calls.

A Quick Message from our Nurse

Hi Parents,

I wanted to send a quick update from the health room.

Sickness has been abundant this year. The DHEC requirement for cough still remains the same, a negative test or a doctor's note to return.

You can get your child tested for free for Flu and Covid at Belleview Elementary. The Call Center is open 8-4 Monday- Friday. Their number is: 803-980-2016 or you can reach them through email at: covid@rhmail.org.

The Call Center is still submitting all Covid and Flu related absences. The link below provides more information.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-j8gAij7zpTizKo_XSBn8xNDoKBUL1vlCXJrLJyloII/edit

If your child has a fever over 100, your child must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication before they can return.

If your child has thrown up twice or had diarrhea 3 times in the past 24 hours, your child must be 24 hours without these symptoms before returning to school.

Please also talk to your child about the importance of washing hands!

Thank you for helping everyone stay safe and healthy here at school!
