4TH GRADE ARTISTS RECOGNIZED
A Message from Mrs. Walden
We have an exciting celebration for our 4th grade artists. There are 44 IHES 4th graders featured in a gallery exhibition at LOOM Coworking, Community Center and Event Space in downtown Fort Mill (please see the list of students- below). Their gallery show is up from Sept 22nd-Dec 9th. There will be a Closing Reception to celebrate the artists on Saturday, December 9th from 11am-2pm. Fort Mill has a holiday festival this day so there will also be a fun art activity being led by one of the other featured artists during the reception.
If you are interested in seeing the work before the reception, please call 803-548-5666 to set up an appointment Monday through Friday, 9am-4pm or visit during one of our public open houses!
LOOM Coworking, Gallery and Event Space is a collaborative business community (in historic downtown Fort Mill) created for remote workers, entrepreneurs and solo professionals which also serves as a venue for churches, classes, meetings and more!

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
A Message from Mrs. McCoy, our Guidance Counselor:
Happy End of September India Hook Families,
As a friendly reminder, we wanted to take this time to remind you of the attendance policy and SC law.
Students are required to attend school 170 days out of the 180-day school year. This is SC Code of Laws 59-65-50 and SC Board of Education Regulations.
Students will be considered lawfully absent when:
- They are ill, and their illness would endanger their health or the health of others (fever, vomiting, or diarrhea).
- There is a death or serious illness in their immediate family.
- There is a recognized religious holiday of their faith.
- The student is suspended from school.
- There is a necessary medical or legal appointment that cannot be scheduled during non-school time (please provide medical or legal excuse).
The school can only accept FIVE (5) parent notes as lawfully excused absences. Any absences beyond FIVE must fall into the above-mentioned categories and the appropriate documentation must be submitted.
Students will be considered unlawfully absent when:
- They are wilfully absent from school without the knowledge of their parent or guardian.
- They are absent without acceptable cause with the knowledge of their parent or guardian.
- They are absent beyond the FIVE (5) allowed absences that can be excused with a parent note and additional absences do not fall into the categories listed under lawful absences and/or documentation is not submitted.
As a school, we will make all reasonable attempts to obtain documentation to appropriately code student absences. Excessive absences (3 consecutive unlawful absences or 5 unexcused days) can result in an attendance plan. If absences continue after the attendance plan is instituted, this can result in a referral to DSS or family court.
Thank you in advance for all that you do to support our positive learning community.

SIC - WE NEED YOU!

Meetings will be once every other month at IHES from 6:00 pm - 7:00 p.m.
If you are interested in serving as a member of our SIC here at India Hook Elementary School, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/CE7nXBDQwbE48uAq8
What is a School Improvement Council (SIC)?
- SIC is a broad-based advisory body made up of a variety of members of the school community. SICs work with principals and other educators in meeting the identified needs of their schools and to continuously work toward excellence.
- By law, every K-12 public school in South Carolina must have an SIC that is made up of parent, teacher, and community member representatives.
- The principal is an ex-officio member of every SIC. An SIC may create additional ex-officio positions such as the school's Teacher of the Year, PTA or PTO President, past SIC Chair, or a representative of the school's Title I Advisory Committee.
What does a SIC do?
- Provide input into the development for their school's Five-Year Improvement Plan.
- Set annual goals to support successful implementation of the Five-Year Improvement Plan.
- Write and publish the annual SIC Report to the Parents.
- Work with the Principal in writing the narrative for the annual SC School Report Card.
- SIC's serve a vital role in the lives of their schools but do not have any of the powers or responsibilities reserved for local school boards.
Why is a SIC important?
- SICs provide additional insight, unique perspective, and vital assistance to educators and students in helping schools reach their achievement goals.
- Repeated research has demonstrated that family and community engagement in schools lays the groundwork for improved student achievement, post-secondary school success, better student behavior, and increased appreciation and support of educational professionals.
