Newsletter 18 - Week 8 Term 2 23 June 2021
Principal's Message
It is New Zealand Volunteer Week....
St Mary’s relies on the generosity of people in our school community volunteering for all sorts of things. I would like to acknowledge the contribution and impact that our volunteers make in our school community. You are very much valued. A HUGE thank you to you all.
We have Matariki Dinner this week on Thursday (tomorrow evening) 24 June. We have been holding the dinner for 8 years now and each one has been successful. You are all invited and we would love to see you there. Bring a plate of food to share and it would be helpful if you could also bring a serving spoon(s). We look forward to seeing you there.
We sent a large team of runners to compete in the Inter School Cross Country at Kaharoa School yesterday. Students who came in the top ten are: Rosa Atkinson, Chloe Dixon, Sean Keeling, Zariah Lomas and Max Schuster. Well done to them and all our runners. Thank you to the parents who transported children to the event.
MONDAY 28TH JUNE, we have school photos. Students are expected to be in full school uniform for this. Information regarding this is contained later in this newsletter.
The Tongan Rugby National team will be coming to Rotorua this Friday, 25th June 2021. An invitation has been extended to our students, family and friends to come on down to the Rotorua Stadium where the team is giving one hour to children/youth from around Rotorua. The whole team will be engaging with all those attending such as playing kicks, ball passes, ball signings, taking questions and even selfies. Entry is at Gate 2 from 4pm – 5pm.
A reminder that we have a Teacher Only Day on the last day of term. If you need child care for your child/ren, you can contact Mary-Ann Roling from Glenholme Afterschool on 347 0709 or 0211 215599. Mary-Anne will be caring for students at St Mary’s.
Have a great week.
David Macmillan,
Principal.
Message from DRS Bernie Hall
Prayer at Matariki
We share the prayers of the people
In kauri and icon, in bread and wine
In worship and shared meals with kumara and puha, or fish and chips, or haggis and scotch
We celebrate who we come from, who we are, and who we are yet to be.
Aroha mai, aroha atu
Loving kindness received, loving kindness to others Wairua Tapu, whispering in a small voice or shouting in water’s fall and siren’s wail
Creative Spirit that dances across the water, Soaring Spirit of mountain, Wild Spirit of wilderness speaking from burning bush, from tussock and hebe, from desert road and city street—
We give thanks for our hikoi of faith, for our dreams of righteousness and acts of justice.
We give thanks for this place and all places of sharing and celebration where we can feel at home and be refreshed, and for all they mean to us, our place to stand and take a stand, our
turangawaewae.
We give thanks for weekday visitors and concert-goers, performers and spectators, entrepreneurs and bureaucrats, dancers and addicts, and for ourselves: makers and breakers of promises, and of bread.
We give thanks that the table of hospitality is open to all, that we may come as manuhiri but go forth together, as tangata whenua.
Aroha mai, aroha atu

How does Golden Time work?
Golden Time activities are special activities that the children have chosen to do as a reward for keeping the Golden Rules. All children begin the week with 30 minutes of Golden Time. Sometimes children have a bit of a slip up during the week and, as a consequence, they may lose Golden Time. Golden Time is lost in 5 minute increments and there are steps for teachers to follow which include quiet conversations.
All behaviour has a purpose (children are trying to get or avoid something) and we need to figure out what is happening for the child so that we can offer the right support and prevent further slip ups.
Golden Time ensures that we acknowledge children’s efforts to keep the Golden Rules - and some days we know that’s not easy.
Parent Meeting 29 June - A Values Based Approach to Digital Wellbeing
Year 3-6 classes have been participating in a programme called Te Iwi Matihiko™ . The programme helps young people and their families understand how to reflect on and care for their own wellbeing while learning about the positive and negative impacts that digital spaces play in their lives.
We are offering a parent workshop about Te Iwi Matihiko - Put this date in your diary. We encourage anyone interested to attend on Tuesday 29 June, 5.15-6pm in R14.
The workshop covers the topics we have spoken about with your children and will highlight key challenges in the social media and gaming space, while sharing their respective benefits.
It is critical that we ensure our children and their caregivers understand the key values that underpin social interactions, know how to deal with cyberbullying, stay safe online, understand how to think critically, manage their emotions and make good choices.

They are also open to girls who are not currently playing Saturday football.
They are not graded or ‘representative’ teams. They are open to any girls that want to take part.
You can take part in one or both of the tournaments. If you are already in a girls' team, check with your coach if you are attending as part of an existing team. The dates are:

CBOP Interschool Cross Country
It was a very cold and windy day at Kaharoa School yesterday for our tamariki who had participated in this event. This is a notoriously gruelling course for many. However, they all showed resilience and perseverance by pushing through and giving it 100%; they all should be extremely proud of themselves. Thank you to our parents/whanau who attended to support, help and volunteer their time as marshals. Thank you to Leidy for being our photographer for the day. Here is a link to view some amazing moments Leidy captured from our day. https://photos.app.goo.gl/myJ4okBujseAafn3A
Congratulations to the following tamariki who have qualified in their age group to participate at the BOP InterSchool Cross Country on Tuesday 29th June 2021. (age as at start of Term 2)

10yr old girls - Zariah Lomas (2nd) & Rosa Atkinson (6th)
11yr old boys - Sean Keeling (4th)
11yr old girls - Chloe Dixon (4th)
HAVE YOU LET THE COACH KNOW?
You must let your child's coach/manager know if your child WILL or WILL NOT be attending practices or games each time! It makes it easier for our coaches to plan training and to ensure they have enough players for the game.
Each sport code has rules around Schools/Teams not having enough players available for games, we must give sufficient notice if we need to default a game.
An email has been sent to Miniball Coaches & Parents about your default rules.
Matariki Night Ride
