Instructional Strategies to Help Students Achieve Common Core Writing Standards in All Content Areas
Who should attend?
Teachers Grades 3-8
About the Presentation:
Writing Process. Six Traits. Genres. And now, Common Core Writing Standards which emphasize literacy across all disciplines! How do we blend all these concepts into a cohesive approach to writing, especially considering the limited amount of time available for writing in most classrooms? Will it mean that we have to change how we teach writing? If so, what do we need to consider as we evaluate current writing curriculum and instructional practices for effectiveness in helping students achieve Common Core standards in writing? How do we decide what to keep and what to change?
In this workshop, we’ll examine some strategies and structures for achieving the Common Core Writing Standards that incorporate process, traits, and genres. Additionally, we’ll work through a variety of writing assignments that meet the requirements of the Common Core standards and are also appropriate and engaging for students. Focus will be on grades 3-8.
We will also look at what students’ writing products tell us about their progress toward achieving the Common Core writing standards. Strategies will be modeled to show how teachers can conference with students to help them improve their writing. Participants will be asked to submit one or two short pieces of student writing, from any content area, for use in our discussion.
Outcomes:
At the end of this conference, participants will:
- explain the requirements of the Common Core Writing Standards
- explain how process, traits and genres blend to achieve common core writing standards.
- develop specific writing assignments and projects for use in ELA and/or content areas classrooms.
- explain the connection between these assignments and specific Common Core Writing Standards.
- explain specific strategies to improve a piece of student writing
- modify existing writing assignments/projects to match Common Core standards
