Coming Back...

Deep breaths everyone...Deep breaths.

I know many of us are on different sides of the "All in/Leave it be" discussion, but one thing remains clear...we want what is best for our kids! April 5th will be much like the first day of school. We will be learning new routines, safety measures, and even making some new friends. I would imagine many students...and parents are feeling a mixture of excitement and anxiety as the date approaches. I wanted to take this time to assure you all that our staff will keep your child's safety in mind at all times. We will be maintaining physical distance as best we can, while keeping up with our cleanliness (handwashing, sanitizing, etc.). This will all be going on as your students are awarded the opportunity to dive deeper into their education. I look forward to seeing the students' "light bulbs" go off as the "Aha!" moments start to happen in the classroom. Parents...you have done an amazing job facilitating your students' online learning. We know how difficult juggling your multiple duties during this pandemic has been and we cannot thank you enough for maintaining your family's priority on education! We are excited to continue to bring more normalcy to our routine and school day and ready to end this crazy school year off strong. Our staff attended a zoom meeting with Dr. Arianna Howard and she spoke about our culture and perspectives. We all come from different places in life. One aspect of this training and discussion was to find a T.I.C., which is something that instantly calms you. This may be a fond memory, a song, or even being around your family/pets. In times of stress and uncertainty, we need to refocus our minds back to a sense of calm (easier said than done...right?). We need this advice more than ever. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns or questions. Take care of yourself and enjoy your weekend!

Black History Month

We have many celebrations happening during Black History Month. Please check out the link below to read up on how PLSD is celebrating. One of my favorites is playing music from inspirational Black Americans as the students and staff begin their day. Music from The Sledge Sisters, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles among many others starts our day off right! We have continued learnign and celebrating with fun "Who am I?" facts over the announcements. Many aspects of our lives were engineered by innovative Black Americans.

Here is short a list:

Clothes Dryer - George T. Sampson – Giving laundry baskets a greater sense of purpose since 1892.

Golf Tee - Dr. George Grant – They say he was an avid golfer, but not a great one. Hopefully his patent improved his game.

Lawn Mower- John Albert Burr – The lawnmower’s best makeover ever brought better traction, rotary blades, and allowed cutting closer to buildings.

Traffic Light - Garrett Morgan – Three cheers for the red, green and yellow. Mostly for the green!

Blimp - John Pickering – His was the first blimp to have an electric motor and directional controls. Goodyear better have this man’s picture in their lobby.

2021 Online Kindergarten Registration Starts March 15

Please note: all families (whether new to the district or with existing students) should begin the kindergarten registration process by using the online registration form located on the PLSD website on March 15.

Kindergarten registration for fall 2021 begins in the district on Monday, March 15 (The link is active now but the dropdown menu for 2021-2022 registration will not be available until the morning of March 15).

Children must be a least 5 years old by August 1, 2021, to be registered for kindergarten this fall. The district offers half-day kindergarten both morning and afternoon sessions. Parents may request a morning or afternoon preference. Depending on the number of parents with preferences, a lottery may be held to determine placement.

The kindergarten registration process begins by filling out the online registration form that goes live on March 15. Access to the kindergarten registration system will be open by approximately 9 a.m. that morning. After completing the application — including uploading required documents — please submit the application. Once submitted, Welcome Center staff will review the application and contact you by email if there is anything else needed.

If all is complete, an email will be sent to the parent stating the application has been approved/Processed, and the paperwork will be forwarded to the appropriate school. Someone from the school will contact you regarding the next steps.

At this time, parents will not be setting up an appointment for a readiness assessment. Those assessments will be scheduled at a later date still to be determined.

Parents are advised that, due to the high number of calls, our staff and phone lines at the Welcome Center may be very busy at the beginning of kindergarten registration. We appreciate your patience!

Find complete information about kindergarten registration on our website.

Parent drop off and pick up (Important Info)

A few reminders for those that utilize our parent pick up and drop off lines. We have these guidelines to maintain the safety of the students and staff

  • Please have your student exit and enter your vehicle from the passenger side, if they need to exit from the driver's side the parent will need to escort them to the sidewalk.
  • You may NOT park in the parking lot and escort your child into the building.
  • During drop off, once the traffic line has stopped and your vehicle is in a position to let your student out on the sidewalk, please do so. We kindly ask that you do NOT wait to drop them off until you are all the way to the door.
  • during pick up, please follow our teachers on duty instructions on which cone you will need to park next to in order to pick up your child.

These expectations and guidelines keep our drop off and dismissal running as smoothly as possible for all families. We thank you for your cooperation.

Attendance and Virtual Activities

Please remember that students must be completing SeeSaw assignments throughout the week in order for their virtual attendance to count. The activities and assignments are very in understanding how to help students meet their learning goals. Teachers have a very large gap in their students' learning if these activities are not completed or attempted. Keep up all the hard work and reach out if you need any assistance.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children ages birth until 5 years old, no matter their family’s income. These books are typically sent out on a monthly basis. According to readingrockets.org, reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. If you are interested in signing up or learning more about this program click here.
