SCIENCE ACTIVITIES with Mrs. Fletcher
Letter from the Michigan Dept. of Education
Recently, many families received a letter from the Michigan Department of Education indicating that their student’s PSAT® scores demonstrate the student has the potential to succeed in advanced coursework, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses. That letter also included a list of AP courses that a student's scores indicated they may do well in.
If you are not familiar with AP courses, they are rigorous coursework students take while in high school with the potential of earning college credit. AP courses are only one option students can pursue to help them earn college credit or other post-secondary credentials while in high school. At Watervliet High School, we are committed to ensuring that our students graduate prepared to succeed after high school. That is why we offer the following opportunities for our students:
Advanced Placement (AP) courses,
Dual enrollment courses,
Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs,
Early Middle College (EMC) programs,
Advanced level elective and performance courses
Please note, while the letter issued by the Michigan Department of Education listed courses in which your student has demonstrated academic potential, the letter may contain confusing information:
Your student may already have taken some of the courses listed.
Your student may currently be enrolled in some of the courses listed.
Colleges/Universities generally don’t encourage a student to take more than 5 AP Courses over the course of their high school career.
Our school may not offer all the courses listed.
While it is too late in the current school year for students to amend their schedules to take advantage of these courses for the 2022-23 school year, it is not too late for students and families to begin planning ahead for the 2023-24 school year. Students will have the opportunity to schedule courses beginning in early March (2023). In the meantime, we encourage you to review the Watervliet High School course catalog at https://www.watervlietps.org/page/student-services for course offerings and have conversations with your student about what they plan to pursue after graduation and how advanced coursework can help them achieve their goals.
Whether or not your family received a letter from the Michigan Department of Education, we want you and your students to know about the opportunities available to all Watervliet High School students. If you have any questions or would like more information about what course options might be suited for your student, we encourage you to contact us or have your student set up a time to meet with their guidance counselor about scheduling for next school year.

Independent Ceramics Projects
Students in the sculpture class have been developing their clay handbuilding techniques since the start of the year. Their first assignment was to use the simple form of a pinch pot to create a ceramic bobblehead character. Next they learned slab rolling and coil building for the monster mug assignment. Finally, students were set free to design and create their own clay project, demonstrating the skills they had gained throughout the semester. Here are their creations.

UPCOMING ATHLETIC SCHEDULE
From the Andrews Community Counseling Center
If you know of potential clients (children, adolescents, adults, couples, families) who may benefit from counseling services, the Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) will have openings for many new clients when we re-open in January, 2023 after the semester break (although individuals interested in services are encouraged to call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get their name toward the top of the waiting list now). Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC are trained to counsel adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.
All practicum counselors are doctoral- or masters-level students who have had at least preliminary counseling experiences, have been evaluated by licensed professionals as ready to provide counseling in a supervised clinic setting, and each practicum counselor provides services under professional supervision.
Types of referral issues accepted include, but are not limited to:
· loneliness
· relationship issues (e.g., marital and premarital counseling)
· grief and bereavement
· social skills problems
· behavioral problems
· bullying problems (victims and perpetrators)
· depression
· anxiety
· academic problems
· career guidance
· parent-child conflict
· personality assessments (when used for treatment planning for ongoing therapy at the ACCC)
· and many others (including just needing a listening ear when social support is limited for you)
We cannot take on cases that involve court testimony, disability evaluations, custody disputes, walk-in crises, or that require around-the-clock availability of intensive services (e.g., frequently actively suicidal or violent thought disorder).
I have attached a brochure which describes the ACCC and how to contact the ACCC. Please distribute this email and/or the brochure in any form (electronic or in print) to teachers, parents, students, community, or anyone else interested in these types of services which we are grateful to be able to offer to the community for no cost.
Please give potential clients the phone number for the ACCC (269-471-6238). We will re-open January, 9, 2023 and start contacting clients within a couple of weeks after re-opening, but individuals may call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get on the waiting list right away.

VAN BUREN TECH INFORMATIONAL NIGHT
Van Buren Tech will be having a parent open house for any sophomore or junior parents that would like to learn more about prospective programs for next school year. The open house will be held on Dec 12th from 5-7pm.
The Van Buren Tech Center is located at 250 South Street Lawrence, Michigan 49064
Students who are on track with credits can attend in their Junior and/or senior years. WHS students attend in the afternoons 5 days a week and bus transportation is provided for students who need it. You are welcome to contact Mrs. Jamie Dawson, School Counselor, for more information.
3 and a B
Just a reminder for Panthers regarding the attendance incentive in place this semester at the high school.
Any student who has achieved a grade of a B or higher at the end of the semester and has 3 or fewer absences by class is eligible to not take an exam in that class. Ms. Powers is happy to check absences in PowerSchool for your child should they email her. The only absences that do not count against the student for this incentive are those that are school related like field trip, college visits, leaving early for athletics, etc.)
SOPHOMORES and CLASS RINGS
Sophomores and Parents,
We are trying to keep everyone in the know about activities this year so we hope this message finds you and is helpful.
The class ring program is for Sophomores at Watervliet HS. In the past, it was primarily upperclassmen who ordered class rings, but now we have adjusted the program so Sophomores can order and wear their rings throughout their HS experience. Now Sophomores can enjoy their class rings for years instead of ordering a ring as a senior and only wearing it for 6 months. Class ring design packets are passed out at the class meeting on Tuesday Dec. 6th. Orders will be collected at school during lunch on December 19th. Because it is a quick turnaround, we wanted to give you a head start. There is a promotion going on this year. If you order a class ring now or on order collection day, you will receive a free pair of wireless earbuds (value of $129.00). Go to Jostens.com and design and order online.
Check out the order window link and the digital catalogue below.
See you soon,
Jim Ross/Jostens

WHAT'S UP IN MS. MARSHALL'S CLASSES?
Online: Students are busy working on their individual online classes and a few have even completed them this week ahead of schedule and have begun a new class, missing class, or a credit recovery class. Way to go! Some of the classes being taken this semester include Japanese, Advanced Calculus, American Sign Language, Healthy Living, Personal Wellness, Psychology, and Strategies for Academic Success. At this point in the semester, students should be at least 65% complete with their course. If you have a student in an online class please ask them about their progress. They have until the end of the semester to finish the work for their classes. At the new semester, they will all choose a new class to take for the remainder of the year (2nd semester).
In yearbook, we have been very busy covering all of the fall sports/activities and learning to take quality pictures for the yearbook. As always, if any one has any exceptional photos that they would like to submit for the yearbook to use please email mmarshall@watervlietps.org and we will be sure to put them in our yearbook folders for use. We also still have 21/22 yearbooks available for purchase if your student hasn't purchased one yet. If they would like to purchase one, please see Ms. Marshall and she can help them. The cost is $45.
In Peer to Peer, the students involved have really been working hard to make connections, learn how their students communicate, and try to bridge the learning gap. We only have a handful of students in Peer to Peer this semester, but we would welcome more for next semester if a student can get it to fit their schedule. In Peer to Peer, Peer mentors learn valuable skills that will help them communicate more effectively and will carry into their personal and professional lives after high school.
The Sophomore class is selling tamales now until December 7th. If you are interested in ordering tamales, please see a member of the Sophomore class. Tamales will be sold by the dozen and the half dozen (pork or chicken). The cost for both the pork tamales and the chicken are $20/doz and $10 for a 1/2. These will be made fresh and will be delivered before the Christmas holiday. Please see a Sophomore!
INDEPENDENT PAINTING PROJECTS
Several times throughout the school year, Art II students are given the opportunity to do independent projects. It is a chance for them to explore ideas and subject matter that they are interested in. And to pick a subject matter with the appropriate level of difficulty to challenge each student. These are examples of their free choice paintings.
We began by looking at some great examples of painting throughout history. Then in groups student did a painting skill lab. For this, they pulled an image from a magazine and tried to mix paint colors to match as many parts of the magazine page as possible; using only black, white, and the three primary colors. This is an important skill needed to mix all of the custom colors they would have in their paintings.
Including breaks for student paired critiques and demos the project took a little over three weeks to complete. Several of these paintings will likely represent WHS at art shows later this school year.

We recently purchased a home, so we've enjoyed renovating, updating, and doing projects around the house. I grew up and completed my K-12 education at Watervliet Public Schools, so Watervliet is very near and dear to me. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree- certified to teach Spanish and ELA, and a Master's in Educational Leadership and Instructional Technology, both from Western Michigan University. Go Broncos! I teach ELA 10 and 12 here at WHS. In my free time I enjoy reading, doing house projects, and spending time with family and friends. I'm proud to be a WHS Panther because of the community that we have here. I love being part of a close-knit support system that shares the same values that I do.
