Pasta for Pennies: Benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Next week is Pennies for Pasta Week at Rising Star! This is our biggest fundraising of the year, so we are really excited for your help! The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is an organization that helps raise money for the patients and families affected by Leukemia and Lymphoma. Next week, we ask that you bring in your change to help the cause. Our goal this year is to raise $1,500! Here is how we are going to do it!

Monday- Bring your PENNIES and dress as a twin or triplet!

Tuesday- Bring your NICKELS and dress like your are from the 70s! Tie-dye, fringe, and peace signs, baby!

Wednesday- Bring your DIMES and dress as your favorite SUPERHERO

Thursday- Bring your QUARTERS and dress as a teacher! Teachers, dress like a student!!

Friday- Bring your DOLLAR BILLS and dress in your Rising Star Spirit Wear!!


The class that raises the MOST MONEY will win a PASTA PARTY from Olive Garden! The competition is always intense, so get ready!

If the pasta party wasn’t enough to get you excited, maybe a pie in a teacher’s face is! The more money we raise, the more teachers get pied. It is that simple. Mr. Barnett will be selling PIE PASSES for the assembly in his Starbucks Store. If you really want to pie a teacher, save up your Starbucks! Only 13 pie passes are available!!!

6th Grade Parents

That time of year is approaching fast! T-shirt order forms have been passed out to your student. These shirts will be used for the "Musical", "Olympic Field Day" and "Rising Star Field Days". T-shirt order forms are due back to Mr. Haskell by Monday, February 29th! There is an order form below in case you need it.

Future Stars Pre-School Program

Parents of preschoolers, come and join us Friday, February 26th at 1:00 for Rising Star’s Future Stars! This is for parents and their kids ages 3-5 who will be attending Rising Star. Friday we will meet Mr. Haskell , the PE teacher, and do activities in the gym. We will also have a craft and have a light snack. We usually meet for 30-45 minutes. Please RSVP to mollyoeh@yahoo.com if you can make it! We hope to see you Friday!

(THIRD AND FINAL) Districtwide* Papa John’s Fundraiser

The fundraiser will begin Saturday, Feb. 20th and will conclude on Friday, Feb. 26th!


Any school that hits $350 in sales for the entire fundraiser will receive 8 FREE Pizza coupons to be used as they like!


(NOTE: This incentive is in addition to the 20% your school will receive back from Papa John’s for your total sales during the week-long fundraising event! Just ask Brookridge & Pawnee; they were awarded the coupons from the fundraiser held in December!!!)

Our next science activity for engineering is creating “hover boards” as a small group. I am in need of old/unused Cds/DVDs and the caps of pop up water bottles. I need as many as possible, so if you have any, I will take them off your hands! See picture below for an example of what we are creating!

Jump Rope for the Heart

Reminder: next Thursday, February 25th is "Jump Rope for Heart" from 7:15-8:00 a.m. in the gym! Please return the permission form if your child will be participating. Any student in grade k-6 is welcome. Students do not need to collect donations in order to participate. Contact Mr. Haskell if you have questions or need forms.

Community Invited to Forums to Discuss Sixth-Grade Configuration

A task force is reviewing grade configuration, specifically related to sixth-grade students in the Shawnee Mission School District. Superintendent Jim Hinson has engaged the task force to discuss this topic as a result of feedback and questions he received from stakeholders. To inform the review process, the task force will hold community forums in each of the five geographic high school feeder areas. Task force members are charged with researching the issue, gathering input from the community, and sharing resulting recommendations with the superintendent. No decisions or recommendations for change have been made at this time. All discussion would center on potential implementation during the 2018-2019 school year at the earliest. Task force members will research and share information at community forums regarding the many aspects to be considered. Each forum is open to all community members. The schedule of meetings, all of which are scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at each location, is as follows:

  • February 23: Hocker Grove Middle School
  • February 25: Trailridge Middle School
  • March 10: Indian Hills Middle School
  • March 21: Indian Woods Middle School
  • March 24: Westridge Middle School


In order to gain broad feedback from staff and community, an online survey will be available starting February 23 and closing March 31. A link to the survey will be shared with parents via SMSD Alert, as well as posted on the district’s web site and through social media.

Are You a Member of the PTA?

Join PTA for just $7 per person or $12 for couples in the same household! And don't worry, by joining you are not committing to meetings and volunteering all the time. You are free to choose what you attend and volunteer for!



What does your $7 do? $3.50 goes tot he State PTA. The rest is used to help our kids! Last year our budget called for $8,000 for school field trips! We put on Family Fun nights and 2 class parties per year! And those are just a small amount of the awesome things our PTA does! So please join and help us continue to be able to fund these awesome items!
