Dates to Remember

Tuesday, February 12th

We will have our 2nd Reading Benchmark. This test will allow us to see the progress they've made since the beginning of the year. It will also build stamina and give the children practice for a STAAR like test.

Thursday, February 14th

Happy Valentine's Day! We will be having our party from 2:00-3:00 PM. Don't forget to have your child come to school with a wrapped shoebox (directions on the back of the invite) and their Valentine cards.

Friday, February 15th.

I'll be attending the Research in Mathematics Education Conference at SMU with Mr. Schlender and Mrs. Golden. Mrs. Hubbard will be our substitute.

Monday, February 18th

Happy President's Day! There will be no school. It's a student holiday. I'll be here though. :)

Things to Note

Biography Project

This week, your child will begin the biography project. This month long project involves choosing a person who has contributed to society, reading a book about him/ her, completing more research with other books and online resources, creating a book/ report, and participating in the Living Wax Museum (dressing up at the person and sharing a memorized speech). Most children have chosen a person to research and will be spending this week (at school and at home) reading their book(s) about him/ her.

Highlights Puzzlemania

Last week, your child received a Highlights Puzzlemania form. I have received most of the order forms back. If you choose to order or not, please return the form. If you say YES, then fill out the whole form. If you say NO, then just sign your name. One of the advantages of taking class orders is that they give the class incentives. I'm trying to get the class a free subscription to Puzzlemania. Your help is appreciated.

Study Groups

Study groups will continue this week. From February 12- March 7th, we will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-3:45.

Wallwisher is a great site we started using in the classroom and at home. Wallwisher (names changing to Padlet) is a place where you can create a "wall" and post notes on it. Check out the homepage to see all the ways the site can be used.

Each day, I will create a new wall. They are differentiated by the date in the web address. Yesterday was Today will be www.wallwisher/wall/voreading0212. Here we will have a collection of thoughts about our home reading as part of our homework- favorite parts, observations, wonderings, connections, inferences, etc.
