SPOTLIGHT SESSIONS
A Veteran's Day Living History with Mr. Tracy Rowlett

Help us celebrate veterans as our Oral Historian and Curator, Stephen Fagin, will interview Air Force Veteran and Journalist Tracy Rowlett. Mr. Rowlett was an award-winning Dallas/Fort Worth broadcast journalist for more than twenty-five years, working at ABC affiliate WFAA-TV (1974-99) and CBS affiliate KTVT-TV (2000-02). As a broadcaster for Armed Forced Radio and Television in Tripoli, Libya, in 1963, Rowlett broke news of the assassination in that part of the Middle East and continued reporting through President Kennedy’s funeral three days later.

Mourning a President

On the opening day of our special exhibit, Mourning a President, connect with us as our Educator and Curator of Collections give you a tour of this exhibit open through President's Day 2018.
Focused on the November 25, 1963 funeral and burial of President John F. Kennedy, Mourning a President explores how a grieving nation paid its respects. Elaborately planned over an intensive three-day time period, this was the country’s most momentous funeral since the burial of Abraham Lincoln.
This exhibit includes the 15-foot-long flag that flew at half-staff above the Senate Wing of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. along with the St. Matthew’s Cathedral funeral program, mass cards, eulogies, photos, film footage, funeral remembrances from around the world and notes from Jacqueline Kennedy about how the funeral was to be arranged.

Your students will explore Navajo weaving traditions through a delightful children’s story, a close-up viewing of Navajo art from the museum collection and a classroom weaving activity. Enjoy the classic children’s book, A Goat in the Rug, by author Martin Link and then investigate Navajo symbolism through authentic, antique weavings. Each student will create a colorful paper weaving inspired by traditional Navajo animal imagery.

Patolli - A Mayan Harvest Game

Students will explore the ancient board game of Patolli and it’s social and economic role in Mayan society during the Harvest Season. Students will view and discuss a Mayan artifact reflecting the god of Games, Macuilxochitl and the god of Maize, Popol Vuh. Students will learn and play the game of Patolli after designing their own game board with personalized Mayan glyphs.

More Than a Drop

This interactive presentation opens students’ eyes to the various facets of water in the environment, from raindrops to aquifers. Students will be challenged to think about where water comes from, how it got there, where it ends up, and how it is being used. Students will have the opportunity to take part in a hands-on, comparative demonstration along with the presenter, to help them better understand water usage and to learn how to conserve this natural resource.

VISTA member Kay Jenkins from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center will present the wonders that can be found in freshwater wetlands. We will go on a virtual field trip to see a bog, marsh, and swamp and explore some of the plants and animals found in these habitats. We will learn about the values of wetlands for reducing pollution, flooding, and erosion and as habitat for aquatic wildlife.
