Positive Action
Kindergarten
The adventure then continues to the Land of Intellectual, where they meet a group of forest animals: Abbott Rabbit, Annie Owl, Barney Bear, and Cindy Squirrel. One night they see a bright flash of light and hear noises. They are frightened, but together they investigate. They discover Positron, a visitor from another planet who must use all his intellectual powers to figure out how to return to his home planet. While visiting his new friends, Positron helps the animals learn to use creative thinking to solve their problems. Positron enjoys spending time with the animals, but must prepare to return home to Intellectia. The animals help Positron to remember his way and Positron transforms himself into a spaceship in order to make his journey home.
First Grade
Maurice the Mouse visits the students and teaches them about positive actions to keep their bodies clean. He tells them the story of when Davey Doddle met K.C. (Keep Clean), and helped him learn about cleaning up after he gets sweaty or dirty to get rid of germs that can make him sick.
Davey also meets the Daily Twins and teaches them about getting exercise each day. He meets Mr. and Mrs. Zee and teaches them about getting enough sleep. After that, Davey meets Hi and Jean and teaches them about taking care of their teeth. He helps Hypo Kondrack understand that taking medicine when you do not really need it is bad for your body.
Maurice and Marrott live in Davey Doddle's attic. They hear Davey read to his neighbor each day, and they want to learn to read as well. Students practice the positive action for creative thinking in order to help the mice learn to read. Maurice observed Davey and his friend read every day and memorized the letters and their sounds. Each afternoon, he would teach Marrott what he learned. Students continue to practice creative thinking as they problem solve.
Second Grade
Throughout unit two, students tackle many of the unhealthy choices Scrappy has made. They learn about good personal hygiene, eating nutritious foods, brushing teeth, and getting enough sleep and exercise.
Students learned the rules for taking medicine:
- always follow directions for a medicine
- only take medicine meant for you
- take medicine only when needed
- never use illicit drugs
They also learn that misusing medicine can make people sick.
In the story, But Why, Sally was a very curious girl who always asked a lot of questions. The teacher in the story taught Sally she could use the positive actions for resourcefulness and curiosity to gain information rather than always expecting others to provide answers.
Students are also challenged to use creativity to solve problems and strengthen their memory.
Third Grade
Students learn the importance of:
- eating the right foods
- personal cleanliness
- physical exercise
- sleep and rest
- good dental hygiene
In another story, students were introduced to Jethro the Germ. He was a small but active germ. Jethro shared a story of how he made his way through Ms. King's classroom. The children in Ms. King's class did not wash their hands, or cover their mouths when they coughed or sneezed. Jethro was able to go from student to student quickly getting many of the students sick. Things were going just as Jethro had planned until he joined the children for lunch landed on the forks in the cafeteria. The lunch lady took the forks and washed them in hot soapy water and ended Jethro's journey. After the story, students discussed the positive actions they could take to prevent illnesses.
Third grade students learn about taking prescription medications and the importance of using them properly. They learn about three ways people abuse drugs or medicines:
- not following the directions
- taking someone else's medicines
- taking drugs or medicines when they are not needed
Students also learned how to stay well and healthy by avoiding or not using things that can harm them.
Third graders are then introduced to the positive actions for meeting the intellectual needs of curiosity, creative thinking, learning something new, problem solving, and strengthening their memory.
In the story Nothing to Do, Angela Arguello was bored of doing the same old things. She wanted her mom to find her something to do. Her mom helped her discover she could make her own fun by using her creativity and what was around her everyday.
Students were then introduced to problem-solving and decision-making. They learned the best way to solve a problem is to recognize it and face it head on. They discussed thinking about their choices and picking the best one. They also learned that ignoring problems is a negative action which can make them feel bad about themselves.
