Learning After Spring Break

Dear Rockbrook Families,

We have a lot to be proud of as a district and school as we have all come together to continue to have a student-centered focus and want the best learning opportunities to be available for our Rockbrook students. We continue to refine and redesign our approach as our Extended Learning Campus continues to evolve. As a District and school, we have taken multiple learning scenarios into consideration in designing student learning that will continue until May 13th.

We are confident we have designed an effective plan that creates consistency across all buildings and grade levels. This decision was made to make it as simple as possible for students to successfully/independently complete within about a 2-hour timeframe with minimal new content. Each grade level across the district will have a consistent Monday-Friday schedule for each week where only a few assignments differ. Math and reading/ writing will have instruction Tuesday- Friday. Science will occur on Tuesday/Wednesday and Social Studies on Thursday/Friday. The specials schedule will continue in the current rotation. Second Step lessons are provided to families once a week and taught at a time that best meets the needs of each family.

Monday - General Student Learning Day. Students will have a learning plan that will not require teacher or parent instruction (e.g. read for 30 minutes). Teachers will communicate a suggested plan for students and families. Families also have the flexibility to design their own Monday learning schedule. The goal is for the Monday routine to be consistent and learning to still occur.

Tuesday - PE, Math, Reading/Writing, Science

Wednesday - Art, Math, Reading/Writing, Science

Thursday - Library, Math, Reading/Writing, Social Studies

Friday - Music, Math, Reading/Writing, Social Studies

Sincerely,

Mr. Higginbotham

A Message From Student Council President Nora!

Nora’s Spring break Message

World Awareness Days

March 21st was World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Yesterday, April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day. Both days seek to provide a time for us to focus on the importance of inclusion in our school and in our community. Awareness days often include fun activities to show our support and we love the pictures students sent in of their participation. We also know that the importance of these days is to learn a little more about and better appreciate the unique abilities of those impacted. If you haven't yet done so, I encourage you to explore the links below with your child about how they actively work to include others, with and without a disability as a part of our community.

Down Syndrome Awareness

Everyone Counts - My Friend Isabelle (Recommended for K-3)

Just Like You (Recommended for 3-6)

Autism Awareness

Need a Charger? Other Materials?

Every effort was made last Thursday to send students home with technology and supplies to support their learning from home. We know that some items may have been forgotten, missed, etc. Please reach out to Mr. Higginbotham (higginbotham.garret@westside66.net) if you need help in accessing materials, supplies or support for your child’s learning.

Upcoming Events Postponed

Due to our Extended Learning Format, many of our school events have been postponed. Linked is a list we will keep updated both with postponed events and once we know dates, re-scheduled days and times.

Safe2Help Nebraska Hotline

Our school has received items promoting the Safe2Help Nebraska hotline. This important resource for families and youth is run out of Boystown and provides a place for students in Douglas County to anonymously reports threats to the safety and wellbeing of others. For more information, you may access the website at Safe2helpNE.org.

NSCAS Testing 3rd through 6th Grade

The state of Nebraska has formally suspended state testing this year due to the COVID-19 health concern. We will be using other data to help us inform teaching decisions and support students as we move into next year.

Don't Forget to TAGG - HyVee is Now Included!

Supporting the school couldn't be easier. Just download the TAGG App and scan your receipts at participating locations. Set Rockbrook as you cause and the business donates back to us!

Work at Westside

Rockbrook is currently hiring for Educational Assistants. Know someone that would be great to work with kids. Please them and us know. We'd love to have them as part of our team making a difference in the lives of kids!

Work at Westside - 3

Lost & Found

If your family is missing any winter gear, it's probably at the Lost and Found. If you have a moment to stop by and check, please do. If items are not picked up by the end of the year they will be donated.

Kindergarten Roundup

Due to the school closure, Rockbrook's Kindergarten Parent Meeting has been postponed. It appears likely that our Roundup will have to occur, as some of our other buildings do, in the initial days of the 2020-2021 school year. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
