Unit 1: Introducing and Developing Numbers 0-5 and Reciting Numbers to 30
This unit focuses on the foundational skills for developing and understanding numbers 0-5, counting forward and backward 1-5, cardinality, subitizing, conservations of set, comparing numbers and sets of objects using comparative language, and generating numbers or set of objects less than or greater than a given amount. They are also to recite numbers to 30 by ones starting with any number.
Performance Assessment
There is NOT a District PA for this unit, but you are still expected to complete a PA for each unit. Here is 2 of the options for PA's for Unit 1:
Option 1
Darla has 5 crackers that she can eat for a snack.
a) Select the appropriate number of color tiles to represent the crackers Darla ate.
b) Orally count the selected color tiles and record the count using a numeral.
c) Rearrange the selected color tiles. Orally count the color tiles forward and then backward.
d) Decompose the selected color tiles into two groups. Orally count the number of color tiles in each group. Record the count of each group using numerals. Describe the relationship between the total number of crackers and the number of color tiles in both groups combined. Explain why the total would be the same or why the total would be
different.
e) Repeat the process by decomposing the same color tiles into two groups in a different way. Orally count the number of color tiles in each group. Record the count of each group using numerals. Describe the relationship between the total number of crackers and the number of color tiles in both groups combined. Explain why the
total would be the same or why the total would be different.
Option 2
Darius and Gina were playing a game. Darius scored 4 points, and Gina scored 3 points.
a) Record the numerals that represent Darius's and Gina’s scores.
b) Describe Darius's and Gina’s scores using comparative language.
c) If Gina scored one more point, record the numeral that would represent her new score.
d) If Darius scored one less point, record the numeral that would represent his new score.
e) Describe Darius's and Gina’s new scores using comparative language.
Have a Number Talk
Of all the things I have seen so far for math, I think that a Number Talk will give you the most “bang for your buck.” In other words, you can get big results with a small amount of time. A Number Talk is a whole group activity that takes 5-10 minutes. It can be done at the beginning of the math lesson, or during some other time of the day. The purpose of a Number Talk is to help students develop computational fluency as well as number sense.
